Sensical evening
Aug. 31st, 2006 10:27 amSight: fireworks
Smell: blueberries cooking
Sound: jars pinging sealed
Taste: chocolate milk
Touch: peach fuzz
I canned last night. I cooked a lot of the wild blueberries (3 pounds?) with a bag of frozen cranberries, which looked postively huge in comparison. They cooked with some sugar, then I heated up the big pot of water for canning... and realized that I didn't have small jars after all. I'd wanted to make lots of minis with this jam, but it was not to be. I got 2 whole pints and one half pint, with just enough left to taste before I cleaned out the cooking pot. Then I diced up all the plums in the house (about 15, of different kinds and ages), added a bag of cranberries (huzzah for the pectination), and let that cook down as the blueberry-cranberry jam cooked and sealed. Just before putting the plum stuff in jars, I added a bit of Chinese five spice. I got two pints of that, plus a small bowlful for eating now. Note to self: buy more canning jars! (I can't believe all I had was that one half-pint, some pints, and almost a whole box of quarts (which are too large for me, really; I don't can the kind of veggies I'd want a quart of at a time).)
At some point I heard what I thought was a car backfiring. Except that it continued, and I started to wonder: gunshots? There'd been that shooting in Union Square reported... I went to the living room, keeping the lights off (thinking about how my cousin died), and looked out.... to see fireworks blossoming over the hospital! It looked like someone was setting them off right there, though that can't be right. I wonder what the occasion was.
I debated making a peach-blueberry pie, but in the end, decided the peaches will have a far different fate: roasted with maple syrup and ginger, hopefully to serve over gingerbread. Of course, that leaves a couple of pounds of blueberries to work with. And I need to figure out the rest of my Shabbat menu, which seems to consist of ideas that don't form a particularly harmonious whole, especially since I'm not on Iron Chef Cranberry this week.)
