Chinese, etc
Apr. 28th, 2006 03:16 pmWhat I'm noticing about Chinese: like other non-Roman-alphabet languages, the line height is very constant. What's different to my eye is how there are clusters of density, glyphs that have many more pieces (brushstrokes seems not quite right for a PDF, but perhaps that is the right term). I still find it hard to distinguish italics; bold is much easier.
It's an interesting hybrid, with a recognizable period (a centered little circle), comma, and parentheses, but otherwise it looks rather run-on. And The Chinese Word for Horse came in useful: I could recognize the man in the word for population. Neat.
Upcoming:
North Cambridge Open Studios this weekend, 12 noon-6pm both days.
Arts First at Harvard, May 4-7.
The MFA is having a gay and lesbian film festival, May 10-21.
I went to all the Longwood lectures, so now I have a snazzy certificate of completion, good for nothing in particular. Interesting talks, though (I still have to write up the one from Wednesday (plus oh-so-many other posts); life is busy).
For those who've seen Thank You For Smoking, the senator's name is Ortolan Finistirre, which is pretty much Finisterre, also, the end of the earth. I wonder why that was chosen for his name...
Eruv status is still unclear for this week. I so hope it's up (which would be the first time in three weeks).
