This year the Locavore challenge (eat local for a month) is for May, which in San Francisco (locavore central, apparently) is doable, but has me wondering how much I can do. It's before the farmers markets open, before the farm share starts, and likely too early for the Boston Organics deliveries to have much of anything local. I don't know enough (or know places I could go) to scavenge things such as fresh greens. All I have at the house that I know is local are the remaining pints of tomato sauce I made last year. I suppose I should take this as a wake-up call to try to can, dry, or pickle more foods when they're in season locally. I think I can get local eggs and tofu, though other proteins are unlikely, given the current kosher situation (it would be lovely to find some local artisanal cheeses were kosher, but I'm not holding my breath). Not enough to make a month of food. *sigh*
There's "April showers bring May flowers" and "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb," which makes me wonder why it's only the spring months that have mnemonic poetry like this.
The Boston Conservatory has a lot of performances this spring, many free. The one that caught my eye, though, was Two Gentlemen of Verona, a rock opera version (!). I wish I had time to go.
Noted last night: the clocks on the Schrafft's building in Sullivan have had the obfuscatory extra panel of lines taken off, so the location of the hands are actually visible, even when pointing to a number. Much more readable.
So much to do, getting ready for Passover (I still have lots of cleaning and shopping), getting my porch set up (what to grow this year?), finishing the taxes. It'll all get done, but it's exhausting thinking about it all.
Thanks to the women's championship baskeball games being held in Boston, I got some spiffy new maps, one of the T (with bus routes and the commuter rail over a real map), and one of downtown Boston and Cambridge with important buildings marked (which is a bit trippy, all the tall buildings looking a bit tie-dyed). It shows the park-that-isn't-yet over the Big Dig, even. And gosh, the new convention center looks huge.
Someone (Teddywolf?) recommended an appliance store in Medford, I think. But I don't remember more than that; refresh my memory? (Or if you have any other suggestion on a good place to buy a fridge, I'd love to hear it.)

Date: 2006-04-04 08:13 pm (UTC)Yup. Among the pluses: free delivery and removal of your old appliance, where applicable.
New userpic?
Yeah, for International Change Your Userpic Day; I just haven't changed back. Variety is good.

Date: 2006-04-04 08:17 pm (UTC)If we'd had the space, I'd have loved to get the new fridges with french doors. They are wider and shallower (counter depth), which made them not fit in our kitchen, but you don't have that giant door swinging out into the middle of your walking space, and you don't have things get lost in the back of the fridge as much, I'd imagine.

Where from?

Date: 2006-04-04 08:21 pm (UTC)They were handing out maps at Park St., and I heard also available at Copley. Not sure just who "they" were, though.

Date: 2006-04-07 10:06 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, I have a smallish fridge space (compared to the average fridge out there), and while I saw a half fridge/half freezer (with three drawers in the freezer, so no whole birds would fit), it was small compared to others.
I'm thinking about getting a small chest freezer to put in the room that used to be my bedroom, once I get it more organized. If it works...
