  1. The Saturday night of Arisia, I tried to put on a fairly new dress with a zipper up the side, from the waist to under the arm. Except the zipper wouldn't go past the empire-waist seam. I'd worn it a couple of times without difficulty, but nothing worked. And then it wouldn't go down, either. So I couldn't wear it, nor could I escape it. Thanks to the diligent help of Library_sexy and Coorr, I was finally able to get out of it without involving scissors. I still haven't brought it to a tailor nor contacted the company to complain.
  2. Last night I unzipped both zippers of the winter coat I got just last year (the outer is the coat, the inner is the strip of fleece that impersonates a full lining), and the inner zipper pieces fell off the track. Oops. Still wearable, but a nuisance.
  3. I know I zipped up the outer coat for the walk home last night. So the missing piece of the outer zipper should be somewhere around the apartment, but I can't find it. Lucky today is a raincoat sort of day, now that I'm in need of a new winter coat...

It's come in threes, so I'm done now, right?

Today's overcastness meant that the usual layer cake of Boston I see from the train as I cross the river (water, then a layer of trees along the riverside, topped by brick townhouses, which in turn have stone, metal, and glass office buildings towering above them) was all frosted with a layer of fluffy clouds.

Will it be all velcro from now on?

Thats some seriously bad zipper karma. Perhaps you have offended some ancient zipper god somewhere along the line. You could attempt some kind of ritual to appease this great and powerful being... but I cant help you there. I only know the rituals to appease the ancient god of laces and its just not the same.

Personally, I recommend that you you look into alternative fasteners for all future clothing. Zippers just don't seem to be your thing.

Sounds like you're ready for half-time at Sunday's SuperBowl.

My last couple of ruined zippers are due to leaving the items (a winter coat, a fleece pullover) drapped over a chair which was climbable by the bird. He loooooooved being able to pick the zippers apart, and pulled off enough of the plastic teeth to make zipping them darn near impossible. *sigh* Learned my lesson, I did, and had to replace the zipper on the coat (the pullover only had about a 6 inch zipper to open the neck up, so I havent replaced that yet).

"Layer cake of Boston" - that's a great description.

Ugh! I once got halfway zipped into an item of clothing in a store dressing room, and could get neither in nor out and eventually had to ask for help. Wow, was that embarassing!

hee hee! I still have a bunch fo tshirts with holes in the shoulders from my ex parrot. Current 'keet is too skittish to chew on me and I miss that.

The start-up costs for wardrobe replacement into velcro would be prohibitive... if winter coats and women's dresses even came with velcro. So probably not.

The other bird loves chewing on my clothes, and a few t-shirts have little holes as a result. Luckily, most of my clothing is sturdier stuff, or my shoulders would be well-ventilated.

I wonder what the correct propitiation for zipper gods would be... Hm...

So, I should get more frogs and hooks and buttons in my life?
Zipper-free makes it darned tricky for back closing dresses...

Since I am used to garb its really not difficult for me to imagine clothing without zippers. That said I guess in this day and age it would be difficult to find cloths designed to work that way, and converting them could be even more difficult.

I suppose, you will just have to make sure that you always have someone around who is an expert in removing women's dresses. I cant be around all the time :-)

It's hard enough finding clothes I want to buy without avoiding all zipperage as well... which isn't to say I couldn't come up with ideas for clothes without, just that I'm definitely not ready to say I'll make the majority of my clothes.

So I should have a sign-up sheet, since you're not volunteering 24/7 :-)

Obviously a sign that you need more backless dresses.

More on Zippers--it is seasonal

My winter coat, a gift from my father...one of the few things that I actually have from him...has a zipper malfunction. It is oh, at least 8 years old, getting thread worn and needs to go...I associate it with a fantasy image I have of him--him wanting to keep me warm and happy. Sometimes it closes and keeps me warm--sometimes it doesn't. The actuality of the disfunction is closer to the truth of my father...

I hope your zipper has less baggage : )

I am sorry to hear about your zipper woes.

Thankfully, this coat has no baggage at all. I got it last winter on a day when the weather turned suddenly chilly, and I knew at the time it was not of the best quality, but it was the only one in the store in my office building that suited me at all, and it wasn't expensive. This time, I shall go somewhere with coats that have been made to last at least a while longer.

Depending upon the policies of the store, you might be able to exchange the coat. Larger chain stores certainly do that, and a smaller individual store might at least offer to repair it. A winter coat should last mor ethan one season, not be felled by faulty zippers!

Alas, for the store isn't anything like an LL Bean. I might bring it in, but I doubt they'll offer to do anything for me (and I've gotten a replacement coat in the meantime; February isn't a time to be coatless).
