I went to a contact improv jam Sunday. Lots of fun, and feeling both strong (lifting someone) and supported (being carried). Plus just plain silliness. I suspect I'll be going back some weekends. (And a decent workout, too; I can still feel sore muscles, but in just the right "here I am" sort of way, not "you did too much and now you shall pay, muhahahaha!" sort of way.)

Plus, still walking to Rivendell, likely reaching the edges of Farmer Maggot's fields tonight.

I made a very straightforward winter hat with more of the yarn Hrafn gave me; I'm surprised at how much positive comment it's gotten. Another is in progress, then that yarn will be used up, so I get to figure out what I'm interested in crocheting next.
(And it's time to think yet again about getting a sewing machine, since I find myself with talented sewing friends who are willing to teach someone who has, for all intents and purposes, not sewn anything. This is especially crucial since I haven't been finding skirts I like, so I could make some instead, and not waste all that time and energy shopping (Er, except, I'd have to shop for fabric and a pattern. Theoretically, this would be less of a pain, and at least I'd not have to try anything on..).)

A link stolen from Klingonlandlady: tree house homes, designed with its own greywater system. Fascinating pictures. (Grow your own home! :-)

Paperwork to do: get a 2006 parking permit and re-up the farm share.

Thank you. I guess I'd need to find a skirt pattern and fabric; are there companies that make better/worse patterns?

unfortunately, most (read: All) of my tailoring experience is with garb. I dont have any experience with regular clothing patterns... but Im sure someone could answer this question given all the craft oriented people that we know between us...

I have a couple of skirts/jumpers that I would be happy to have duplicates of; can I use current clothing as a pattern easily, or is it a pain?

In theory it really shouldn't be that difficult. you just need to add on some seam allowance on each piece and you can just use the measurements off of an existing garment. Its not as easy as using a pattern but if you are careful and the cloths aren't form fitting you can definitely do it.

Oh, excellent. The cotton knit skirt I have is fairly simple (straight with a walking slit, elastic waist), so that might be a good place to start. The other thing I'd love to duplicate is a jumper that is also pretty simple in shape (I wore it out...).

1. Cut fabric into a circle.
2. Cut a circle out of the center.
3. Voila!

Yes, but mostly I don't want full circle skirts.

Plus, it's likely to need at least two semicircles instead of one circle, if the fabric's width isn't twice the lenth of the skirt I want (likely).

you just need to adapt to shorter skirts ;-)

Oh, I know how to sew things, both practical and dressy- one year I made all my sisters dresses for Sukkot. But I don't like to sew. My sister, however, likes to sew and is good at it- she made her own wedding gown. She may have some patterns you could borrow, and could point you to good cheap fabric stores. I'll ask her.

Thanks! I know of at least two fabric stores near(ish) my house that have good prices, and I've heard of all the great bargains findable in Chinatown...

And I'm impressed that your sister made her own wedding gown. Wow.

I have patterns for long skirts. I have a sewing machine that (while occasionally randomly cranky is a very good machine) you could borrow for a bit, should you wish. I may even have some random fabric that might interest you.

OOOOH! Yes, please!

I'll go through my fabric stash and see what I've got in terms of enough that is skirt-able. And I'll dig through my patterns and find what I've got. I know I've got both skirts-qua-skirts and dresses that can be adapted so that the skirt can be made on its own (just add waistband!).

Are you looking to do both winter-weight and spring-weight stuff, or just one, or just the other?

I'm more interested in patterns and the machine, since this will give me a reason to indulge in fabric shopping (something I've ruthlessly kept myself from doing since I haven't sewn or quilted, despite the siren call....), but if you have fabrics you're not likely to use... I'm looking for all kinds skirts, since my supply has gotten down to critical levels (read: very few skirts to wear to work, of any weight).
