magidWednesday, January 4 (that would be tomorrow), the ACLU is hosting a "town meeting" on the Bush administration's program of domestic surveillance.
Speakers: Congressman Ed Markey (D-MA),
Marc Rotenberg, Executive Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) in DC, and
Carol Rose, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts (ACLU-MA).
Time: 7 P.M.-9 P.M.

Location: the National Heritage Museum, 33 Marrett Road (at the intersection of Route 2A and Massachusetts Avenue), Lexington, Massachusetts 02421
(I note that the museum is free, too, though only open until 5 most days.)
Thursday, January 6, through Saturday, January 13, the HRDC is putting on Euripides' Alcestis.

Cost: free, but go to the A.R.T. box office in advance to get tickets

Tuesday, January 15, the Old South Meeting House is having a talk on the occasion of Benjamin Franklin's 300th birthday. (He was born on Milk Street in Boston!)
The talk is titled "Stealing God's Thunder: Benjamin Franklin's Lighning Rod and the Invention of America." The speaker is Philip Dray. Oh, and birthday cake will follow the lecture.
Time: 6:30 P.M.

Location: Old South Meeting House, 310 Wastingon St., Boston, MA, 02108
Thursday, January 26, James McBride, author of The Color of Water and jazz musician, will "explore the nature of identity, race, and heritage" with the music of his jazz ensemble and spoken word pieces.
I read the book, which was very interesting, about his discovery that his mother wasn't black (his word), but a white Jewish woman passing as black. Fascinating stuff.
Time: 8 P.M.
Cost: $15 non-Northeastern affiliates
Location: Northeastern's Blackman Theatre, 360 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA
Plus Arisia, of course. (They're having a glasses drive this year, so if you have old glasses, bring 'em along.)
