Fic in a Box - my gifts!

I received three fantastic gifts for [community profile] ficinabox - what a bounty! Time got away from me; I've been meaning share this this sooner, but here they finally are:
  1. A wonderful Grimm fic where everyone comes together to shape the future of the Wesen world - I really wish the show had gone in a direction like this, instead of insisting the Wesen world had to keep hidden:
Clock Strikes Midnight (4204 words) [Teen]
    Fandom: Grimm (TV)
    Relationship: Nick Burkhardt/Sean Renard/Juliette Silverton
Characters: Nick Burkhardt, Sean Renard, Juliette Silverton, Rosalee Calvert, Alexander
Content Tags: background Rosalee Calvert/Monroe, Wesen & Grimm & Royals Politics, Plans to make the Wesen world go public, Politics, Worldbuilding, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Voice of Reason Rosalee Calvert

Summary: "Revelation is inevitable. Sooner or later, we will be found out and our secrets dragged out of the shadows and into the light."

At a potluck picnic in the park, Portland's Wesen gather to decide their future—and that of the world.
  2. A delightful Grimm fic in an unconventional format - this one's from a Wesen textbook! I'm so fascinated with all the bits and pieces of history we got over the course of the show, and I love getting more of that!
A Historical Perspective on the Gesetzbuch Ehrenkodex (6082 words) [Teen]
    Fandom: Grimm (TV)
Content Tags: Wesen & Grimm & Royals Politics, In-Universe Textbook, Pre-Canon, In-Universe Documents

Summary: Being the introduction to a textbook on the history of a complex time in the wesen world.
  3. And an amazing gift in a Yuletide-rare fandom where two characters I've been wanting more interaction for get to have a great missing scene together that I wish had happened just like this in canon:
A Private Audience (1265 words) [Teen]
Fandom: Nantucket Trilogy - S.M. Stirling
Relationships: Kashtiliash/Kathryn Hollard, Raupasha & Kashtiliash, Raupasha/Kenneth Hollard
    Characters: Kashtiliash, Raupasha, Kathryn Hollard
Content Tags: Missing Scene, Not Canon Incompliant, Uptimers vs Downtimers, Hollard Family Tropism for Royalty

Summary: Raupasha seeks Kashtiliash's permission this time...

Warm greetings to you all on this lovely Saturday. :D It's time for this week's Free for All. There are no themes to follow for prompts or fills. If, perhaps, you missed a prompt theme that you liked, or you've had any ideas that didn't really work with Tuesday's or Thursday's posts, then today's your chance to prompt 'em. Be free, and have fun! ✎

Just a few rules:
1. No more than five prompts in a row.
2. No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
3. Use the character's full name and the fandom's full name for ease in adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
4. No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here. Unfortunately, DW doesn’t have a cut tag, so use your best judgment when it comes to spoilers.
5. If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
6. If your story has possible triggers, please warn for them in the subject line!

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Are today's prompts not catching your eye? No worries, because we have plenty of older prompts that just might do the trick! You can browse through the comm's calendar archive (here on LJ or here on DW) for themed and Free For All posts, or perhaps check out Sunday posts for Lonely Prompt requests. (Or, you can be like me, and try to save interesting prompts as you see 'em... and then end up with multiple text doc files full of [themes + links + prompts] that you can easily look through and search for keywords.) Multiple fills for one prompt are welcome, by the way! Oh, and you are very likely to find some awesome fills to read as well, and wouldn't it be nice to leave a comment on those lovely little writing distractions? ~_^

We are on AO3! If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3, please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2025 collection.

If you are viewing this post on our Dreamwidth site: please know that fills posted here will not show up as comments on our LiveJournal site, but you are still more than welcome to participate. =)

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so… and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

A friendly reminder about our posting schedule: Themed posts for new prompts go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a Free for All day for new prompts of any flavor. Sundays are for showing Lonely Prompts some love, whether by requesting for someone to adopt them or by sharing any fills that you've recently completed.

I have no idea where December went! On the one hand, yay, I'm done with work now for this year! On the other, what do you mean, Yuletide reveals are in a few days?! *flails*

So before that happens, a catch-up update!
  • Time keeps slipping; I ended up putting a santa hat on my default icon a week late, and my Christmas decorations are still very partial. It's one of those years ...

  • [community profile] ficinabox had multiple delays and ate into the Yuletide period more than I'd expected, after [community profile] rarepairexchange had already had more delays than expected, eating into the [community profile] ficinabox period. (Because I really am constitutionally incapable of letting a story go until it's gone live, I will keep working on it and often expanding it ...) So I probably should try and stick mostly to exchanges with a fixed reveals date next year - if those have delays, they tend to be small ones.

  • I got a whole bounty of gifts for [community profile] ficinabox - I'll post about that separately - and I wrote two stories myself! I don't think I'm terribly anonymous; it's fairly easy to tell which are mine. But I'll talk about that after author reveals. *g*

  • Right now I'm working on Yuletide, being chased by BEARS - I'm editing and (yes) expanding my assignment, and fiddling with a treat. I'm really having fun with my assignment! But fighting a bit with the narrative voice; I may end up making changes there after all.

  • Over at [community profile] sid_guardian, our slo-mo rewatch (half an episode per week) is going strong! We're having fantastic discussions every week, and it's so much fun. And we're only at episode 8 (taxi scene and Zhao Yunlan's disaster flat coming up this weekend!), so we're going to be at this for some time. :D

  • Recently I've been making spinach eggdrop soup, which is delicious! It's mainly this recipe, though I've made a few changes. (I boil the broth for 10 minutes with chopped ginger and scallion, which makes it super flavourful, then add the cornstarch, then the eggs. And I don't bother with blanching the spinach - I just dump it straight into the soup after the eggs are in. Also works with frozen!)

  • How's everyone else doing? *sprays BEAR repellent all around*

I hit Price Chopper, the Bakery, and Agway while I was downtown. I got GCs from Marshall’s (Price Chopper was out, so no points *sad face*), the local diner and a local pizza place, as well. (I also picked up a BK GC for Addy, which I hope she's tickled with.)

I visited mom, did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I put a chuck roast in the crock pot before I left the house this morning. (If the crock pot is the greatest invention ever, the bags that go inside the crock pot have to be the second best. I love them! They make clean-up so much easier.)

I typed in my second [community profile] fandomtrees fic, gave it a re-read and edit, then got it coded and posted to AO3!! I’m very excited. I’d like to write one more; two if I have the time (and mental energy). I stopped in to see my used bookstore friends because I still had to drop off their card. We had a nice chat. AND I watched another ep of The Pitt. Secrets of the Zoo was my evening background tv.

Temps started out at 53.1(F) and pretty much started dropping from there. It was 39 at noon. We certainly had the expected rain in the morning. At one point it was coming down hard AND the wind was blowing it horizontal. I got soaked walking into Agway. The rain turned to snow about noon, then stopped altogether about an hour later. But there’s more in the forecast, just not any accumulation, which I appreciate.

I thought the warmer temps and rain would get rid of all the snow/ice left, but it did not. The ‘ice’ is currently slushy so easy to walk on because it gives, but once the temps drop it’s going to be slick. Thank goodness for my Yaktrax!

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Yesterday after work I did a library run (more Rick Riordan!) on the way to pick up a hire car for the weekend. Then drove with Charles over to Northstowe for the Kodiaks Christmas party at the Northstowe Tap and Social. Secret Santa, noodles buffet, attempting to introduce an American to prawn crackers - she didn't like them - and a drag queen bingo.

I left the party a little early to go to the last Warbirds practice of the year and was so glad to be back on the ice again. (Yes, in shock news, 48 hours after having a massive mood crash about having a cold forever, I was well enough to skate hard for 90 minutes. It is a weird signal, but a consistent one.) It was ten days since my last practice, and it's now ten days until my next one (Kodiaks 2 on 30 Dec). I missed it so much. Practice was just the right level of challenging that I'm really pushing myself but not feeling like a hopeless incompetent, it was just what I needed, as was seeing my teammates again.

(Charles made his own way home from Northstowe by bus)

Tonight is the last Kodiaks 1 game of the year, for which I will be herding the volunteers as usual, and rocking my lovely new manager's coat (incredibly warm knee-length hooded puffer coat, personalised with the club logo and my initials). There is apparently a post-game clubbing plan. And tomorrow morning I'm taking Nico climbing. Somewhere in there I'm sleeping, honest.

I have 2.5 more days to work this year, and I am so ready to be done. The giant Ocado order is booked for Tuesday evening. I have a very large pile of borrowed books to read, and the rink public skate schedule in my calendar. The hot yoga place had a special offer, so I also have a 12-day pass to get me through the lack of hockey practices. They are quite strict about turning up sick, and I still have a bit of a cough this morning, so I won't be using it today. But hopefully tomorrow.

A long awaited victory

9 years ago I bought Bloodborne as one of my first Playstation games.
I was rubbish at it.
I'd play for a bit, get stuck on Father Gascoigne, go play something else, come back two years later, repeat.

Today, having not played Bloodborne for months, I thought I'd give the fight a few goes through, to warm up on the game again. It took me at least ten minutes of wandering about to remember what the buttons did.

And then I beat him first time, without it even feeling that hard.

I made mistakes, I nearly died twice, and I'm not sure I *deserved* the win, but for the first time he felt clumsy, and like he was giving me space to breathe, and I wasn't panicking all the way through the fight.

And now I get to play the other 90% of Bloodborne.

(I'm now trembling quite a lot, as my adrenaline levels drop back to a reasonable level. If you'd like to see what the fight looks like, for someone rather better than me, here's an example).

Look at me, reading things in a timely fashion!

Snake-Eater by T. Kingfisher was a very compelling, immersive read that I...don't know how I feel about? I enjoyed it a lot as I was reading it and I have all the respect in the world for the consciously and intentionally batshit choices Kingfisher made within it, but, well, it was batshit. Not my preferred kind of batshit, either, and not a kind that the first half of the novel led me to expect. I was there just vibing so hard with the stark desert atmosphere and building sense of supernatural horror, when suddenly, we learnt that the malevolent force of evil pursuing the heroine was SPOILERS ) and that the mysterious Catholic priest helping her was MORE SPOILERS ). I had been hoping for something very different, something more anchored in fear and dread and the oppressive vastness of the desert, and it all felt like a bit of a letdown.

On the other hand, I did really like the badass elderly lady character who took up as the heroine's snarky magical guardian (I have now read two T. Kingfisher novels, and both of them prominently featured a badass elderly lady character who took up as the heroine's magical guardian; is this a theme with her or a weird Two Nickels situation?) and I'm always going to cheer for any author who says "fuck it" to marketability and just follows their bliss. Get it, T. Kingfisher! SPOILER ) that SPOILER )!

Slow Gods by Claire North was...how do I put this? A worthwhile slog. I'm very glad I read it and would heartily recommend it to other space opera fans. But it took a full 50% of the book before I started enjoying it enough to want to sit down and read more than a few chapters at a time, and even then, it never reached the propulsive levels I always hope for in a work of this type. It's fundamentally a story of ideas, not of characters; of large-scale ethical conversations, not ordinary human emotions. I was never once tempted to DNF but it also lacked any element that would have helped me personally invest in the narrative.

Mawukana na-Vdnaze is born on one of the lower social rungs of a hypercapitalist dystopian society, in a setting where human civilisation has expanded throughout the galaxy but faster-than-light travel is too dangerous to be attempted without very good reason. Exceeding the speed of light requires entering arcspace, a dimension of darkness that sometimes swallows whole ships and invariably, within a few flights, destroys the mind of every pilot who navigates through it. Maw is conscripted as a pilot and dies on his first flight, along with everyone else on board. But he is brought back, an "imperfect copy of himself", a mostly human body in which the unknowable consciousness embodied in arcspace can dwell to sate its curiosity about the world. He doesn't age, can't be killed in a way that lasts, and - most crucially for the plot - can pilot through arcspace as often as he likes, sustaining no psychological damage and never losing any passengers or cargo to the dark. Thus he becomes a valuable chess piece for more sophisticated players to move around the board of a massive interplanetary cold war aggravated by equally massive environmental catastrophe.

Good sci-fi is always about something real, and this book is about so many things. It's about the climate crisis and the evils of unchecked capitalism, about western imperialism and the war in Ukraine, about gender and neurodiversity and seemingly every possible issue of personal identity. It balances these themes well, but that is still a LOT of themes, and without much in the way of a more concrete anchor. I think the main point of disconnect for me is that I didn't care even a tiny bit about the book's central relationship. I liked Maw a lot as a protagonist but didn't like his love interest and was unconvinced by their short yet supposedly life-changing fling, and without that buy-in, Maw's whole character arc just fell a tiny bit flat. I feel like I'm going to be picking pieces of the book's worldbuilding and philosophical ideas from between my teeth for ages, but on an emotional level it has already passed through me like water and left little behind. Very strange experience. But since I've ended up giving more space to critiques than praise - always easy to do - let me just say again that I'm very impressed with this book, think that overall it succeeds in its large scope, and am really glad I took the time to read it. Also, the tinges of cosmic horror are wonderfully creepy.

Weekend Plans

Okay, let's figure out my plans for the weekend, shall we?

All of my big bills (hotel, storage unit, phone, PO Box) have already been paid, so unless something very unexpected happens I don't have to worry about any major expenses the rest of the year other than a vet bill on the 29th. So that's definitely something to be happy about, as it means I can focus on other things this weekend.

I think my plan is to get up tomorrow morning and do my usual weekend cleaning. That way, I can get all of those things done first thing. I'll wash clothes, do some vacuuming/dusting/mopping/etc., and then hopefully by mid-afternoon I'll be free to work on other things.

By which I mainly mean writing as many fics for Yuletide as I possibly can, to be fair. That said, I still need to watch this week episode of both The Mighty Nein and Critical Role, so I'd like to get that done tomorrow as well.

That way I can spend pretty much all of Sunday writing. 🤞🏻

Yuletide works are scheduled to go live a little under five days from now, at 9pm UTC 24 December (if all goes well and there are no further pinch hits needed).

COUNTDOWN TO REVEALS

Treats

Treats in both the Madness and Main Yuletide collections are enthusiastically welcomed. You can post a treat for someone in the main collection up until 9pm UTC 24 December, and in the Madness collection up until 9pm UTC 25 December. There's more information about posting treats here. If you're hunting for inspiration, see also the mini-challenges tag at [community profile] yuletide, and of course, please consider treats for pinch hitters.

Pinch hits

We’re still looking for intrepid writers to take on post-deadline pinch hits. As of this post, we need writers for:

PH #184: Aveyond (Video Games), Quasimorph (Video Game), Geneforge

PH #198: even if TEMPEST 宵闇にかく語りき魔女 (Visual Novel), Flowers Series (Visual Novels), Lkyt. (Visual Novel)

As well as offers from writers, we're keen to hear (yuletideadmin@gmail.com) from anyone with tips on how to consume or review details of these canons!

Please look at our outstanding pinch hit details, and help if you can!

Beta requests

Can you help out a fellow writer by beta-reading their work? Please check the hippo-want-ads at the Discord server, or email mods if you can help with one of the following requests and we’ll get you in touch.
As of this post, beta readers are needed for the following requests (click/expand to view):
1.2K T-rated Mayor of Kingstown
15k+ E-rated Damien/Gerald Coldfire Trilogy
7k Batman Wayne Family Adventures
Racepicker and sensitivity reader for a 10k fic featuring a young Black English girl
4.7k slang and other dialogue choices right for a Gen Z Black Londoner, Rivers of London
13k Lunar Chronicles
2.8k fic for The Odd Couple (TV 1970)
4k Nicked by M.T. Anderson

We also have some less time-sensitive beta requests in the server's betas-wanted channel:
WH40k
The Witcher III/Chronicles of Narnia
The Stakeout from Inside No. 9
Daria (Cartoon)

Meanwhile, please check your work

  • Please check that you uploaded the right draft. Mistakes can happen to anyone, but checking that everything looks right is a crucial part of posting. Make sure your work has a title and that the summary doesn't say "tbd". Please check that all the text is there and you didn't post the version with [name?] and [thing goes here] notes. Any uploaded version must be a complete story that is readable as it is, even if you're still making edits between now and reveals. Please don't risk disappointing your recipient or requiring mods to seek a back-up pinch hit.

  • Please check that all required characters feature in the work. This is likely to mean all the characters your recipient tagged, not just the ones they wrote prompts for. Or, if they selected Any, a character from the tag set. They may have selected additional tags that give further guidance about which characters to include - please check that too. If your recipient selected Worldbuilding and you're not sure there's enough of it, get a second opinion - a friend, a beta. If there is any doubt about whether your story contains all the characters it needs to contain, please check with mods. Prompts alone are not automatically permission to leave characters out. The use of additional tags may still leave some grey areas.

  • Please review your author's notes. Yuletide stories are anonymous for one week - do not give your name or link to your personal sites or socials in your author's note. Do not promise expanded, future, or replacement gifts - your work needs to stand alone. And do not apologise for your work in your author's note, or talk about what a struggle it was to write. People often feel doubt as well as excitement when giving someone a story, but don't give your recipient your doubts as part of their gift. In your author's note, please follow the principle that if you cannot say something positive, don't say anything at all.

  • Please check your recipient's Do-Not-Wants. Yes, again.

  • Please check your story in general! You don't have to get it beta read, but please check spelling and grammar. Please make sure that it’s not a wall of text with no spacing between paragraphs - and, conversely, that there aren’t too many blank lines between paragraphs.

(And, having fully prepared for reveals - we hope that you are excited for them! We are!)

Miscellaneous
  • If you're unlikely to be able to comment until the end of the anon period or later, consider letting your author know at the AFK post.
  • You can find beta volunteers at this post or at the Discord server.

Earlier this month my mother's old sewing basket ended up with me. It had so many spools of thread, including ancient wooden spools that were sold, back in the day, for just 55 cents. These old wooden spools had a message stamped on them:

FAST
TO
BOILING

The spool has "Fast to boiling" and "15¢" stamped on it

This blue thread swears to you that it will hold fast, will not turn fugitive and fade or run, even in the face of boiling water. What a heroic promise! In the face of torture this thread will remain (stead)fast.

If I sew with this thread, I'll do so with reverence for its commitment.
