Last night I got home later from the birthday party than I'd anticipated. Turned on the computer, started downloading email, turned the fans on, and hopped in the shower. As I was toweling off, the lights turned off, along with the computer and the fans, of course. Another blackout.

I tried sleeping in my room, but without the fans, it was just too hot. The only place that was even vaguely bearable was the porch. So I started layering sheets and blankets and my sleeping bag on the porch, grabbing things in the dark. Then I tried to sleep. Which didn't happen so much. I kept wondering when the power would come on, and how late it was (last I knew, it was around 10:30), and feeling slightly vulnerable for sleeping outside without even the flimsy protection of a tent between me and the sky. There were breezes, at least, some so light that the only way I noticed was the sweat on me cooling off. Still, I couldn't sleep for the longest time.

And then the birds woke me fairly early. I went in, hoping that the power was on, but no. The thermostat said 6:30, and I really didn't have anything I had to do around the house, having already showered, being unable to go online, and wanting to keep the refrigerator door closed. The more time I spent at home, the longer I'd be focusing on the electricity I wasn't getting.

Even with a longer walk than usual in the cool of the morning, I was in to work at 7:30. I hope the power goes on soon; I've got lots of veggies coming my way this afternoon, and especially with this heat wave, I want to be able to put them in the fridge. Also, this makes the second power outage this summer, after years without more than momentary blips. Is this summer so much worse? (What will happen come August?) Or are there that many more users on the grid?

Bonus track: Google maps has added the moon! See where all the Apollos have landed! (And zoom all the way in, too.)

Power outage = yuck. Cambridge is on Nstar, yes? Give them a call and ask what the hell is going on.

Very cute! I always thought it was green, though.

Yup, Nstar. I tried calling this morning, and couldn't cope with the telephone tree (it was way too early to be thinking clearly), which definitely didn't want to let me get to a person. I'll try again sometime this morning.

Not for Wallace and Grommit!

(Mmmm... Wensleydale.
Well, it would be mmm..., I'm sure, if I'd ever tried any.)

Just called; it's much easier to get to a person during business hours. The outage is due to a faulty cable, and according to the update the rep just got, it should be fixed by around 10 this morning.

I hope so.

Keep track of how long it was, and send them a bill for any spoiled food. You can't charge them for spoiled sleep, but if this was a broken cable, and not an act of nature or widespread blackout, they should take some responsibility for it.

We used to get frequent little and not-so-little blackouts in Medford and then the Mayor got on Mass electric's case.

Thanks; I'd not thought of that. If the power goes on in the next hour or so (12 hours off), I'm hoping everything will be ok.
