The good: a surprise backpack armadillo, a new winter hat, time shared.

The bad: Hawaiian birds that may be extinct today, and First Bush awarding Schwarzenegger for public service (What public service has he done, exactly? Movie star, maybe? Being elected governor? *snerk*).

The not-ugly: one of the photo catalogs I saw this morning was all pictures of food... and it included recipes! (Not for every picture, alas, but still!).

Actually, Schwarzenegger served on the first President Bush's Council on Physical Fitness, as honorary chairman, I believe. I'm surprised the article didn't note that.

I do remember that when Bush Sr. lost, Shwarzenegger was so unpolitically savvy he didn't realize that he was supposed to tender his resignation so Clinton could appoint someone else. I believe Mary Lou Retton was his successor.

OK, he's done *something* for public service, but it's not much. I mean, I'd expect an award to be given to someone who's dedicated much more of zhir's life to public service than he has (Marian Wright Edelman? Kweisi Mfume? I'm sure there are zillions of others.). Maybe I'm a bit biased, too, in thinking that someone with such incredible public recognition might not find the award as useful as someone with a lower profile.

Oh, and

The scarier thought in that article was President Schwarzenegger...

OK, I've gotta ask

Backpack armadillo? Is this an armadillo to ride in your backpack, a backpack shaped like an armadillo, or an armadillo with a backpack?

Although given his liberal stance on social issues, I might prefer him to Bush.

Of course, there were all those accusations of sexual harrassment to consider.

Hm.

None of the above, exactly. A couple of months ago I posted about the differences between T and car commuting, with a throwaway line mentioning armadilloes... and someone took that further and got me an armadillo puppet, which I discovered one day recently already in my backpack. He even came with a leash, in case I need to walk him :-)

Well, I'd choose him over Bush, but I'd choose almost anyone over Bush, so it's not saying much.

Mmmph. His social policy has only recently drifted away from the right - most likely a ploy to make himself more moderate. I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled a W and showed his true colors once in office.
