Is there anything fun and/or interesting going on Monday?

23 apples + 4 pears = 0.5 soup pot full of apple-pear sauce.
Debate: cinnamon or plain?

I went to the Butcherie this morning, and found that they have fresh ground turkey, for $4.99/lb (almost double TJ's). What I don't understand is why they're also selling already-made turkey meatloaf for $4.99/lb too. Hm.

What would the fall be like if Sukkot were before R"H, and the holidays ended with Y"K? Would there be more time to appreciate this wonderful season, rather than turning around and finding it's mostly passed? Alternatively, having Sukkot a week later than it currently is, to give some breathing room after Y"K, rather than having it be the last leg of the holiday sprint.

I wonder if people who are deaf have an easier time training as a mime, since sign languages involve communicating through gesture. Or would it be harder, always wanting to break out into actual words, rather than implied ones?

Mmmm... ginger.

If I manage to can this tonight, a couple of pints should definitely be gingered.

Wouldn't it make more sense to call is "jarring" instead of "canning"? Of course, given the brand name of the jars, you could call it "balling".

It would. However, "canning" has the weight of historical usage behind it, while "jarring" is, well, jarring.

Xerox or photocopy? Kleenex or tissues? Balling or canning? Hm...

It could make your life sound much more exciting: "I spent the evening balling apples and pears."

Ginger works well with pears. I've never tried it with apples or an apple-pear mix. But you don't have to choose just one approach -- do some plain, some cinnamon, some ginger, and some of whatever else you think of. Variety is good. :-)

Interesting question. For me, Sukkot is kind of a return to the world -- a reminder that God is right here with us, not just some distant judge who's just closed up court for the year. So I wonder about the impact of ending with Yom Kippur. On the other hand, having a little down time after YK before having to dive right into another holiday strikes me as helpful from a pure practical perspective!

Right now, the fruit-stuff is all in one big pot; I'm trying to minimize the extra containers I'd need if I had a variety of different flavors. I'm thinking of doing another batch after chag, when I'd have the leisure for more variety. (Just found out yesterday the farmer's market is going at least through the end of the month :-)

I like your view of Sukkot. It's always been hard to get everything done in time for the holiday, being so close to Y"K, and sometimes I forget about the ideas behind, rather than the physical aspects of (This really is the most strange of the holidays. Waving greenery and fancy lemons? Beating willow branches? Circling shul?). I was thinking about Sukkot fitting the climate better earlier (here, not in Israel...); it's less likely to require gloves when eating dinner in September or late August :-).

Of course, an alternative (were calendar redesign possible) would be to move Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur earlier instead of moving Sukkot later. Sukkot is an agricultural holiday; RH and YK are not.

But since these dates are all pretty clearly specified, we're kind of out of luck. :-)

Somehow, moving R"H a month earlier seems wrong (since it has to be on a new moon), while Sukkot feels more fluid. I mean, yeah, it's in Torah as the nth of the month, but it doesn't feel as bounded, somehow, even sol
