The NYTimes has an article about how it seems that the right ear responds more to speech and the left ear is attuned to music (The left hemisphere of the brain processes speech, while the right processes music.). I wonder if musicians are more left-eared, somehow?

Overlapping triangles in tech art: hot hot triangle on triangle action.

There's something satisfying about being in a place and reading about it at the same time. Monday I sat in the Public Gardens, near the swan boats, and read about public art that transforms, including a section on the swan boats. (Plus the usual amusement of seeing duck butts waggling in the air as they scout for whatever it is they're looking for underwater. So silly looking.)

I wonder what Jews in the path of the hurricane are doing for R"H. At least there was enough notice to evacuate before the holiday, but still...

Well, Atlanta is not directly in the path of the hurricane, but we do expect to get pelted with rain and wind from about Friday onwards. Walt & I plan to pack a couple changes of clothes today so that if the power goes out again (as it did when the remnants of Frances blew into town), we won't have to fumble around in the dark for our stuff before taking refuge at friends' houses.

I hope you don't lose power over yom tov.

(We got remnants of one of the previous storms up here, but the heavy rain wasn't intense enough to cause other problems.)

Fascinating article. I just did an experiment with a 4-track demo mix (guitar, bass, percussion and vocal) and mixed all the instruments to one side, and the vocal to the other. I didn't find the vocal more comprehensible in one ear or the other, but when the vocal was exclusively in the left and all the music to the right, there was a definte... disturbing quality to the music that wasn't there before.

This might help a touch with making lyrics more comprehensible in final mixdown.

I've never mixed sound, so it's interesting to hear about how it can give a different effect just from which side it's on. Thanks.
