I came home. I went down to the de-moldified basement. I looked at my furnace. The pilot light is on.

That's good, I suppose.

Next step: replacing the batteries in the thermostat, even though it doesn't indicate they need replacing. I loosen the fiddly little screws, and try to get part of it off the wall.

No dice.

It sits there, firmly keeping itself attached to my wall. I pull, I pry, and nothing seems to work. I have had to change the batteries once the entire time I've lived here, and I think someone ended up doing it for me. I tried to find information online, but this thermostat is old enough (a Honeywell Chronotherm III, if anyone cares) that there's not a PDF of the user's manual online, and I've never had a paper copy. I suppose it's useful to know I can order a copy from Honeywell, but that doesn't help me NOW.

I feel so incredibly frustrated.
And cold.

Can you call them? Or do I need to put a hex on it?

Damn. That's annoying. I'm sorry you have to deal with such agita.

On the plus side, I get to see you tomorrow night!

I called, I left a message. No word back yet, though apparently they're coming back today.

Hrafn had some suggestions over the phone, as did her L (not a surprise that he would, just that he called; a nice surprise, that). So I tried (a) calling Honeywell to get assistance with opening the thermostat, but they're only open until 4.30 central standard for customer service. So no dice (until today, hopefully) (I love 800 information, btw). The button turning the furnace from off, to lighting the pilot, to on was in the on position, but perhaps something went strange there in the turning on. So I turned the pilot off (it's not like it's making any difference being on just now...), and will try again to get things on before heading to work.

Maybe a hex would help :-).

(and the thing is, it wouldn't be so horrible for me if it didn't also manage to sap all motivation to get anything else done in the evening.)

I'm looking forward to seeing you!

So after a night of being off, I turned the pilot on successfully. The thermostat doesn't seem to be managing to get its heating message down to the furnace, however.

Perhaps it's time to send for professional help.
Sigh.
I really didn't need another thing to throw money at.

Dang. That's irritating.

I don't know about thermostats, so sadly, I have nothing to add to the advice you've already gotten. I hope someone at Honeywell will talk to you soon; that's probably your best cheap option.

I called Honeywell, and pretty much all the woman said was that I should make sure the screws were all the way out, and it slides up "like a garage door". Maybe it will work.

In the meantime, the mold contractor, who apparently returned the call of my neighbors quite promptly, have yet to return either of my calls. I left both day and evening phone numbers, too.
