Rosh Hashana prep

magidCooking done:
Sweet round challahs and rolls are out of the oven.
Two trays of chicken and rice with sun-dried tomatoes are in the oven.
Chocolate-chip blondies are made.
Lentil-leek soup with spicy sausages and sweet potatoes is simmering.
Buttercup squash baked with maple syrup needs to be mashed.
A gefilte fish log has been boiled, made sweet and a bit spicy.
Red cabbage, apples, and onions are stewing together in a bit of apple juice; I'm not sure where the idea came from, but it's using up another head of red cabbage, so I'm pleased.
Still to do:
Cranberry apple sauce, if I end up doing it.
Salad prep (though that's more likely to be done tomorrow).
It feels like I should be making something else, perhaps something green...
Also:
Second load of laundry in process.
Three kinds of apples (Honey Crisp (Wolf's recommendation), Macoun (Cthulhia's mention made me think to get them), and a Mutsu (just because I remember someone mentioning them somewhere or another)), and three forms of honey (straight clover honey, orange blossom honey with comb, and whipped honey) acquired.
Five-day candles [1] bought (I have absolutely no luck with the regular yahrtzeit candles [2], which inevitably go out between mincha and maariv [3]).
Shehechiyanu fruit [4] has also been bought (kiwis for me, guava in case I acquire guests).
Not done:
Much thinking about the non-food (and other logistical) aspects of the holiday. This happens most holidays, and I regret it. I keep telling myself there will be time during the holiday...

May 5764 be a good, sweet year for all.
[1] aka Jesus candles
[2] Candles that are lit on the anniversary of a relative's death. They're supposed to last 25 hours, but...
[3] I, however, am using them for a different purpose: I can transfer, but not light a new, flame on holidays, and will be lighting candles on the second night of R"H from this flame.
[4] It is traditional to have a new fruit, over which one can say the "shehechiyanu" blessing [5], on the second night, since Rosh Hashana is not new enough at that point to say this blessing. New fruit is one that has not been eaten in the last month or more.
[5] A blessing about being glad that one has been kept alive, sustained and all, to make it to this day. It's said over new things, like clothes and fruits (but not other foods, for some reason), and when starting holidays.
