I got email from the alumni association, telling me how much dues are for the year: "$30 dues ($50 dual-member married/unioned household)".
And for the life of me my first thought was why would they care if one person was a union member?

Hairless fishnuts! Hairless fishnuts! Hairless fishnuts!

This has been a test of the emergency LJ system. In case of a real emergency, there would be no hairless fishnuts.

In two weekends, I'm going to Philly for a friend's party, celebrating his wedding in Israel (yesterday), and staying with some college friends while I'm there. This is good. However, the weekend has a higher opportunity cost than I'd thought. I'll miss a going-away party, a birthday gathering, and likely an equinox celebration, too. Phooey. Why didn't anyone read the rules? No one is allowed to have gatherings that I want to go to before checking with me!

I'm going to Africa, and I'm bringing an aquarium.
I'm going to Africa, and I'm bringing a belted beluga and an aquarium.
I'm going to Africa, and I'm bringing a chantry, a belted beluga, and an aquarium.
...

I'm going to get some work done.

What?! No hairless fishnuts? That *would* be an emergency!

Hairless fishnuts! Hairless fishnuts! Hairless fishnuts!

So how sad is it that my first thought upon reading this was "Just cough up some dough, Mac!"

(OK, so that was "hairy fishnuts," but still)

Would hairy fishnuts constitute an emergency?

Hm. "Emergency" must come from the same root as "emergence". Which implies that something new is likely to be a problem. Interesting...

"hairy fishnuts"? Now you're just being silly.

I admit that for some reason my brain never kept 'hairy fishnuts', transmogrifying them to 'hairless fishnuts', even though, faced with both kinds of fishnuts, I suspect I'd dislike the hairy ones more...
Hairy fish. Ugh.

But yeah, same source, stored in slightly warped brain in the interval.

The emergence/emergent/emergency pun is a small part of A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge.

Cool. Sounds like a book I should track down next time I'm at the library.

Unfortunately, lots of cashews, indeed.
Phooey. Double-damn. And some other interjections, about a bushel of them.

Maybe we could do dinner and you could tell me about all I missed?

I don't think you'd want to schlepp a book around on the off-chance you'll run into me :-)

Oh, did I type that?
How about 'hairy fishnets', then?

Hey, I assume all backpack space is taken up with your own current reading, just in case you finish the next two or three on your list...

Big Backpack, Baby!

you forget that in a worst-case scenario, i can always pick up the book in question and start reading.

(anyway, i can bring books to diesel if you'd like?)

I take it you're not really going to Africa.

Not sure whether I'll be there or not. If I am, it'll be briefly, more of a wave at everyone than anything else. :-(

Unfortunately, there's no trip to Africa on the horizon for me.

Someday... I so want to see Morocco, especially. And Mali. And Madagascar. And Nigeria. And South Africa. And Lesotho. And...

I hear Liberia is really nice this time of year. There's no escaping the Blahs there, though. ;)

Not quite so nice if those soldiers actually have come down with malaria, as I heard this morning, even having had anti-malarials...
