Yesterday at work there was a wonderful smell of garlic. By now I expect toast-smell or popcorn-smell as a matter of course (not to mention whatever morning breakfast smells come up from the cafeteria), but garlic was completely unexpected. I tracked it down to an orker's office. She described what she was eating as she enjoyed it: gemelli pasta with asparagus pesto. She'd cooked the asparagus, pureeing the stalks with olive oil, lots of garlic, and cheese, then cooked the pasta in the asparagus water, serving the pasta with the pesto and the asparagus tips. I thought about it, realized I was unlikely to make this with asparagus, but broccoli might work... and it's been ages since I last made pasta.

Last night was warm, and I didn't start cooking until dusk. I'd just gotten an infusion of veggies from the farm, so was more interested in starting on those than getting other veggies. I sauteed the collards with onions, adding a small bunch of turnip greens as well (I boiled the turnips for later mashing). The idea of pasta had stayed with me, so I started a pot of water. What shape? I checked the cabinet to see what I had. Hm. Not many options. There was a new shape, though, so I decided to try fiori, which look like flowers drawn by a little kid: a middle circle, with 6 circles around it (no stems, though :-). Once the pasta was done, I added some cheddar, a can of chickpeas, and some of the sauteed greens. I added salt and pepper, and a little unsalted butter, and, though it was a completely different dish than my cow orker had described, it still felt like she'd inspired it.
(Side note: this shape of pasta seems to have a tendency to tessellate the sides of the pot :-)
