Nahant is an interesting town, a little drumstick sticking out into the Atlantic. The houses are an interesting mix of older mansions and suburban predictable, the housing stock on the whole leaning towards interesting. The beach areas vary; some are mostly rock, some are sandy, but all have much more interesting waves than Revere beach (read: higher). One area has boulders sticking out into the waves; it looked like an amazing place to have a picnic on a sunny summer afternoon. The sandy beach had lots of seaweed, plus a few shells and washed-up pebbles. It was pretty chilly, with a stiff breeze, but a wonderful day, with the high waves, and the sea a shade darker than the overcast sky. The patterns on the sand were fascinating, waves and ripples, in texture and color, bands of sand with water flowing atop or not.

A walk into Harvard Square, then to the Boggle Tournament, about 50% larger this year than last. Not surprisingly, Queue won (happy birthday!). I got a couple of words I was pleased with, including caids, thinners, tawdry, wintles, sinuses, and guarder. I hadn't played in ages; it was fun to have the chance to play so many rounds. I just wish I'd had the chance to play against everyone there. Good to see everyone who came; it felt like far too long for far too many people.

I went to Waterfire this evening, in Providence. I wasn't sure what to expect; it was rather interesting. There are braziers floating in the middle of the river, each with a huge fire in it, burning wood, with sparks flying from each one. I saw barges go by with people repleninshing the fires with gnarly logs (and some straight ones, too). The air is filled with the campfire smell of burning wood, and the entire length of river that has fire in it also has speakers mounted, with music playing the whole time. There was a variety of music, all of it rather haunting (though perhaps some of that was the added sound of all the fires snapping and crackling, plus the acoustics in the mostly stone-lined waterway, and the setting). There was some "world music," which sounded African or perhaps Brazilian. I heard some opera, some other instrumental stuff I couldn't identify.

There are walkways on both sides of the river, though one seemed to have much more space than the other, and I found a dance performance in one area, dancing to the music of Waterfire. It was beautiful, women in white, with painted faces, except for the couple of others who were more in elaborate garb (oh, one of these was a guy). Compelling stuff. I meandered the length of Waterfire, and found at one end a ring of fire in an open space. There were also candle chandeliers lit in some of the bridge underpasses, which was gorgeous. One thing I didn't do was take a gondola ride along the route, complete with gondolier in straw hat and white-and-red striped shirt. Later on I discovered the dance area, a half block off the main Waterfire route. There was a band playing swing music, and lots of couples dancing (some with much more skill than others).
