Sewing

I keep finding myself thinking about making things out of cloth. I had classes in junior high in sewing, but they definitely didn't stick; even threading the machine didn't make sense to me.

A friend pointed out that sewing machines are not incredibly expensive.
So... would anyone be willing to help me learn to sew, possibly help me pick out a machine? I'd be happy to trade (crocheting lessons, bread-making lessons, or just a supply of fresh bread or a meals...).

Is it the sewing part (laying out patterns) or the machine part you don't understand? With a little help from my fuzzy memory, zzbottom started teaching himself. (Until he broke one of the needles and then we never got back to it for some reason.) So, one important lesson, the needles have different weights to handle different fabric.

Having not used a machine in decades (except for a serger a while back, to make a bellydancing veil), I have to assume it's both the machine part and the sewing part.

Plus the perfectionist in me holding me back from doing anything on my own because it won't match what I was trying to do, of course.
