Morning thoughts
May. 5th, 2003 09:45 amI find it ironic that some bar owners in the People's Republic of Cambridge are hoping for more business in the wake of the smoking ban implemented in Boston today. *Which* municipality is more progressive?
I have an undead answering machine. Not long after mentioning last night that I had to get a new one, since this one was deader than a doornail (Do we even have doornails any more? What makes them deader than any other kind of nail, or screw, or bolt?), I glanced over, and saw that it was on again. It's been dead for almost a week, and it suddenly turns on again? I'd already checked all the connections, multiple times. The phone had been working fine the whole time. I have no idea why it came back, but I could well imagine some creepy little story where the answering machine is just sentient enough to hear about its imminent removal, and make an effort to avert its fate. Why did it die in the first place? Any of a number of reasons: attack by the jealous phone; ultimate ennui with its fate; a short out-of-body experience to visit its grandmother, a circuit board in Kentucky; having been indoctrinated for a week by an evil genius, it returns to slowly warp a person's life, slowly gaining control until it can make the leap to take over the person's body.
I suppose I shall get a new machine, but the urgency is a bit less now. Does anyone have suggestions for features that are particularly useful or things to avoid?
This weekend's crop of spam includes not only the by-now-familiar opportunities to increase a nonexistent part of my anatomy, but quite a few that promise to keep spam from my inbox. Er, excuse me? Your spam promises no more spam, and I'm supposed to believe that?
The one I found most intriguing, however, was one that had only the subject line "Want to feel like a Tiger?" I'm curious as to how many people out there really want to become more feline in their daily life. Or perhaps it refers to living in a jungle? Or being more striped? Or the ablility to kill and eat small animals? Or is it just a color thing?
[1020 addendum: Yet again, the rosemary in my office is blooming, a bunch of little purple flowers, in one spot only. I'm amazed at this, considering just how blasted and bare the plant is, actually.]
