Thanks to [profile] breedingimperf, I checked out the yarn store Wild and Woolly in Lexington, and they were as nice as she said. I spent more on yarn than I'd planned (ever true), getting yarn not only for a commissioned hat in 'earth tones' (browns, reds, and oranges, which I would call 'autumn colors'; I think geography makes a difference here, MA v. CA), but also some others just because they called my name. So far, not only has the commissioned hat been done, but two others of a variegated red/pink/black mix, a black hat with pink and turquoise, and another beret as well.

(And this was far from the only description with this sort of issue, too. Oy.)

I'm trying to envision the Unitarian Jihad.

"And on the plains of Megido, the Jewish Temple Sisterhood shall bring forth its rummage sale, and the Unitarians shall hold their bake sale. And there will be many bargains, and much exchanging of recipes. And the people on the coasts shall cry out: "Oh, we were so going to go, but -- you know how it is, what with the kids having soccer and all."

A kind of ice cream unlikely to be made at Baitcon:
According to a 1943 New York Times article . . . American airmen stationed in Britain "place prepared ice-cream mixture in a large can and anchor it to the rear gunner's compartment of a Flying Fortress. It is well shaken up and nicely frozen by flying over enemy territory at high altitudes."

Okay then.

I think I'll start ending my letters (oh the many letters I write... better make it LJ posts) with "I'm on a unicorn." Let's see what happens!

*grin*

That would be fabulous!

(A friend has said she could glue a unicorn horn and a tiara to her bicycle helmet, which somehow seemed like something to share here...)

Someone already did envision the Unitarian Jihad.

Actually, long before that article came out, there was once a underground movement bunch of rowdy troublemakers in Liberal Religious Youth, the UU youth organization at the time, called the Unitarian Defense League, complete with rallying cry ("Go To Hell with the UDL!") and coat of arms (on a sword palewise a flaming chalice, or something like that). They were a playful, fun-loving bunch that, rumor has it, got LRY banned from several conference sites. One of the founding members is now the minister of the Medford UU church and his daughter is in Benjamin's kindergarten class.

LRY was much, much more than the name "UU youth organization" implies. There's a reason the UUA shut it down--not necessarily the best reason, but there was a reason. I only got to go to a couple LRY-remnant cons when I was a teen, and I'm sure the amount of nudity and pot-smoking was a far cry from what it had been a few years earlier, but still-- a lot of parents weren't entirely comfortable with what their kids were getting into.

Wild & Woolly is a very, very dangerous place. Looking at the yarn on display there almost makes me want to knit socks.

I am luckily free from sock knitting desires, but it is hard to get just a little yarn for the things that do call my name... And the ladies there are really nice, too.

Hm. If I bike out, I'll be constrained by the size of my backpack. That might help! Though some yarn is rather squishable.
