Another naming even based on current events: the decision to name the new central artery tunnel the Liberty Tunnel. Ugh, so jingoistic. Not to mention so distinctive and memorable... (more details, plus a cool photo from above of the Zakim Bridge, in this article).

Also interesting was this article on getting balanced war coverage by cobbling together a variety of news sources, since, as Hauntmeister noted, there is a distinct lack of balance in the mainstream media. Of course, it is somewhat ironic that this is published in a mainstream newspaper...

There's ostensibly a new English Al-Jazeera website (http://english.aljazeera.net), but I can't get it to answer. http://sg.biz.yahoo.com/030325/72/39chk.html (http://sg.biz.yahoo.com/030325/72/39chk.html) was the article which pointed me to it.

You know, naming a tunnel after Liberty doesn't bother me so much. I like Liberty as much as I do Life and the Pursuit of Happiness. I do wonder how Romney will react a few months from now when people mistakenly start calling it the French Tunnel.

Well, Life Tunnel sounds like far too much optimism about Mass drivers, but what about Pursuit of Happiness Tunnel? OK, it could be taken as an amusement park rip-off (or perhaps the translation of some beautiful Japanese sentiment), and would be shortened to the Happy Tunnel, but is that so bad? :-)

The French Tunnel, on the other hand, sounds like a 19th century polite phrase for some sex toy or another....

I think it's only really jingoistic *because* of current events. I mean, it's Massachussetts, for goodness sake. I spent three days in Boston last May, and could barely walk down any random street without tripping over Liberty this and Liberty that and Liberty the other damn thing. It's part of the charm of living in the cradle of the Revolution. :)

I suppose you're right, but it's now that they're naming it (and of course, no one had any ideas until now about this, according to the article), so it does feel different.

You're welcome... it means I remember to read them each week, too :-)
