I invited some people over Sunday morning to have popovers-with-toppings. I figured that I could make up to 15 popovers at a time, so having up to 15 people there would be reasonable.

Well, not exactly. With the fiddlyness of getting batter into popover cups, and the timing of batches, I was in more of a tizzy than I like to be while people are over.... I didn't get as much chance to chat with the people who came due to this, which is a shame.

Hosting note: events where I'm cooking throughout are distinctly different than ones where everything is done in advance. Despite not-inviting far too many people I'd like to see, if I do another of these, I'm likely to invite a smaller crowd. And it seems I should invite different people, so more can share popover goodness.

At least there was much appreciation of the food, and the toppings worked out well.
(the toppings list: apple butter, Key lime curd (that didn't gel when I made it), blueberry jam (ditto), butter, mesquite ho ney, cranberry jam, cranberry chutney, Earl Grey truffle guts, maple syrup)

Cooking note: popovers cooked in the big pan pop more when in the center of the top rack, rather than off to one side.

I also got to play a couple of games of Palabra, including my first one with shaving :-).

I went to the semi-antisocial of the goat. I haven't made it to a potluck in a while, so it was particularly nice to see people I haven't seen recently.

Highlights inc luded:

  • Talking with people.
  • Drawing on the rust-colored tablecloth (the hosts put out fabric pens for this purpose, really), and seeing what other people had already drawn. I admit to encouraging someone to make a "10,000 Blank White Cards" drawing on it :-). Lots of quotes over the course of the afternoon, but the one that stuck in my head was "10,000 blank white cards sounds like Calvinball for grownups." :-)
  • Daniel asking me to read him a story. I think it's the first time he's asked m e :-). He brought over Oh, the Places You'll Go, which (hard to believe) I hadn't read before. Of course, the cadences in Seuss books make them pretty easy to read aloud right off the bat.
  • Getting Daniel to make faces at me, along the length of the dinner table, and watching his dad trying to see what both of us were doing at once. (Did I mention Daniel is 4?)
  • Everyone singing the ladybug picnic counting song from Sesame Street, to the wonderment of the small person (yeah, it's Daniel again), and the wonder of someone finding out there was a stanza they didn't remember (fire insurance for ladybugs, anyone?)
  • Getting some crocheting done, and figuring out what to do with the bag I'm making now.

You can make popover batter up to a few hours in advance. After mixing it I suggest refrigeration, and probably add an extra two to three minutes at 350 degrees to ensure full cooking.

I made 8 batches of batter... I don't think I had room in my fridge for it all (or, rather, I wasn't organized enough to make it all in one fell swoop). Useful for the next one, perhaps.

Eventually I'll do my own...wish I'd been able to have yours this weekend, though, but I'm not on potluck.

OK, it sounds like I should have more popover production. Right now, I'm just a little bit disinterested in eating any more than the (I am so glad I didn't count them) popovers consumed yesterday... perhaps in a couple of weeks...

Point of clarification: the popping over for popovers was distinct from the potluck people gathering. I was trying to be the social butterfly and do two social events in one day. (Wonder why I'm tired today, and have dishes still to do when I get home....)

ah. confusion. :) well, there's no particular reason why I can't make them myself in muffin tins; I just need to get around to trying it. I'll let you know if I do have time to try. :)
