What does root rhyme with?
All I can think of that might have the same vowel sound for you would be roof...

I assume that [livejournal.com profile] hrafn is from that part of the country where root and soot rhyme. This didn't bother me when I was there, except during math class. "&sqrt; 3" does not rhyme with "foot glee" in my dialect.

In my dialect, root and soot don't rhyme (Just as well, I suppose, since I can't seem to come up with anything that ends up with root soot, or soot root.).

Was your math teacher from "away"?

Yes - "root" and "soot" rhyme, and "roof" has pretty much the same "oo" sound. I grew up in eastern Oregon, but my parents are from northwestern Minnesota (Mom) and Chicago/LA (Dad moved to LA at 14).

Marcie says it... to Peppermint Patty. Which makes me one of my favorite candy bars (if one can describe a cylinder as a bar...). Hrm.
