Arisia highlights
Jan. 21st, 2003 11:26 amArisia turned out to be as intense as cons usually are. There's just no way to encapsulate them, somehow. Or perhaps it's just beyond me to do that, with time somehow compressed, so much going on at once, none of the boring bits of life, just the exciting or interesting parts.
I ended up bringing a lot of food, much of which actually got eaten, which was good. I brought: 14 multigrain rolls, two boxes of water crackers, a block of cheddar cheese, a frustum of a pyramid of goat cheese, a package of lox, some capers, chopped scallions, a bag of washed red leaf lettuce, baby carrots, grape tomatoes, whitefish salad, flavored tofu with a dip, humus with kalamata olives, Peppermint Patties, raspberry gels, crystallized ginger bits, almonds, egg salad. Only the cheddar, ginger, and almonds made it home again. I managed not only to feed myself, but 8 other meals, plus leftovers to the gamers, who made the rest of it vanish.
I was glad I managed to bring so much real food; I don't know that that kept me from getting sick this year, but it certainly didn't hurt. There was less smoking in the lobby, too, which is a good thing.
Bits and pieces from the rest of the con (definitely not comprehensive!).
It was good to have Shabbat dinner with people. I hadn't realized until Mabfan mentioned it before making kiddush that the first kiddush in space had been made in the last hour or so before we gathered. It seemed appropriate that I heard this at an sf con.
I was tired enough that I was even more punny than usual, which earned me the first of five ribbons I got over the con: Wandering Punster (the most noteworthy of the rest: Penguin Lust :-). I also apparently had a lovely first line to a poem, perfect iambs about lemmings. I knew I'd not remember it until after Shabbat, and I didn't. At least I'm not in cat food...
I ended up at the Looney game show, and not only got a bunny box, but made it far enough that I won a copy of Playing with Pyramids, which I've been intending to buy anyway. Much silliness all around.
Made it to a few panels; why is it that there are either no panels I want to go to or far too many?
I got to appreciate the many costumes, both people I know and those I don't (feather mask!). Of course ran into lots of people. I suppose it's not ideal that I managed to spend more time with some local friends at the con than I've managed in weeks (months?) previously. Definitely need to work on that.
Dueling easels were interesting, comparing the choice of composition, and the styles of the artists. The art show had some wonderful pieces, but the room was so damned cold when I was there that I didn't linger long.
I was glad to be invited to havdalah; I could've sworn I packed matches, but that turned out to be false. I also figured out where the computer room was (strangely not crowded on a Saturday night :-), but resisted the urge to check LJ. Heck, all I was likely to have found was recipes, anyway, since such a large fraction of my friend list was at the con...
I still regret sleeping through Writers With Drinks, but the sleep was so appreciated. Still need more, of course. And it meant that eventually I did end up going to the dance. As last year, the music was more techno-gothy than I really like (I prefer 80s and 90s music, stuff that I know, so I can dance to it better.). But I was in the mood to move, and so I did. Later on I ended up doing more swing, which was incongruous, I suppose, but fun. And there was a remix of Carmina Burana, which surprised me; I don't think of that as a dance piece...
I was glad to get to meet the Looneys, too. Very cool people.
I missed the panel on food and SF; I was just too exhausted to rouse myself to go. I wish it had been at a different time. OTOH, I learned a new-to-me variation of gin rummy, which was something I could just about cope with by then.
Glad I got to see so many friends (LJ and other) there, even though some rather briefly. Didn't manage to buy anything again (I was tempted by earcuffs, but never did make it back when I could buy things), but that's fine with me. Next year, perhaps.
And for the record, I recognized someone from his *own* userpics, not the evil warped ones someone else has made of him.

Yeah, I heard you fed my Hungry Thing. Many thanks :) (He never seems to pack enough food.)

That's so not fun.
