magidApparently far after almost everyone I know, I saw the movie today. Matinees are cheaper, therefore good. Matinees start in daylight and end in darkness (for this movie, in the winter, anyway), therefore bad, or at least making me feel I've done nothing much else today. Wait, I really didn't do much else today (ok, Jotto and a nice breakfast, and finally lugging the newest bag of flour up to the apartment. Not much for a day that could've had some accomplishment.).
Anyway, the movie. I enjoyed it, and again want to go to NZ. I assume there are already tours capitalizing on the movies (though I myself would prefer to have a map and the leisure to explore, with a few friends, perhaps, not a package that zips through far too much too fast.). I liked that a lot of the battle scenes were fast and bloody (War may be for a good cause, the best cause, even, but actual minutes of battle are pretty nasty for most everyone.). As everyone has already said, the Gollum-technology was impressive, and Gimli needn't've been made the humorous one (dwarf-tossing, too!). Gollum's double personality came out much better in the movie than what I remember of the book (read far too long ago, so probably inaccurately remembered). I really liked the Ents, but my image of them had been much more living tree than the beings that seemed to have lots and lots of bare branches, however much the trunks were mossy (great face, though). I still don't know why orcs fight with right angle thingies. And I keep wondering about all the mundane things, like where the supplies for the legions of nasties are. How can they supply themselves if they destroy the land as they go?
Yes, it's an intermediate piece, so really doesn't stand so well on its own. Still, a necessary piece. I know there will be marathon movie events a bit over a year from now...
