Friday Logarhythms
Dec. 15th, 2002 09:49 amFriday afternoon I got home about two hours before Shabbat (Skipped the work holiday party. Ah, well.). I managed to make a batch of plain flatbreads (a heck of a lot cheaper than getting challah from Broadway Market), did a couple of loads of laundry, paid the mortgage, and started dealing with the non-draining tub. It felt good to get so much done around the house.
After dinner, I walked to Kresge for the Logarhythms winter concert. Like all the student a cappella at MIT (now, anyway), a free concert. I was amazed to see the hall so full (it's a large place). Parts of the stage had been removed to provide more seating, and there were no empty seats. Took a while for everyone to settle down, though. First up were the Dartmouth Decibelles, an all-woman group that was musically decent, but didn't seem to have a lot of stage presence. Of course, it's also possible that they were better than this, but the family with lots of little kids who don't yet understand volume control when they talk were a bit more distracting than I'd thought. Oh, and the mom thoughtfully provided snacks in special crinkly wrappers, too.
It was odd to see a group that was all thin females, the majority of them blonde. No one of any non-Caucasian background at all.
After their set, the BU Terpsichore was up. I'd seen them before, and thought them decent. Another all-woman group (to balance the all-men MIT group? or to have chicks to party with later?), but with a lot more presence. More playing with sound, more choreography, more variety of voices, more comfort on stage, or something. They also did songs I know, including "It's Raining Men," which I remember them doing at a BOCA concert last year.
Then the MIT Logarhythms were on. Well, they were announced. No one came on stage, but part of the audience was lit up (there was a good use of a variety of lighting throughout), then a brighter light as people realized to look back on stage. There's a cargo elevator (the doors meeting horizontally in the middle, not vertically) to bring things up to the stage, and the guys used that, with back lighting, to make an entrance. The crowd was screaming. The guys were great. I don't know why it seems to be that guy groups are more able to get away with lots of things, while women groups seem to have the choice of how to be sexy. Anyway. The music was quite good. There were also three comedy sketches that were entertaining, all based on TV shows I've actually heard of, know something about (gasp!). A couple of encores, too.
I was surprised the rain had started by the time the concert was over; the weather people had kept saying it wouldn't start until after midnight. I walked quickly to try to be less drenched by the time I made it hom
