I felt almost as social as certain other butterflies, having plans to do more than one event...

There was a Boggle evening hosted by a member of Havurat Shalom at the house that is the shul.

It was my first time in the building, which is a nice space. A tile piece on the wall with Mizmor L'David; a framed section of a sefer Torah (last week's portion; I assume the section is pasul somehow); a fascinating mantelpiece with double archways above, topping the wood-burning stove; a wicker aron with macrame parochet.

I was surprised to find how many of the people who came I already knew (3 (people, that is. This is not a footnote.)). The difficult part for me was when someone I knew who is married showed up, and I asked after her husband... who turned out to be standing a few feet away. I hadn't recognized him, because he was wearing a dress, make-up, heels, hair fanned out, etc. Actually, after I knew who he was, I still didn't recognize him (I've met him enough times to expect to be able to), so was disconcerted to hear his voice, then remember that his face was not as I'd expect. My confusion was compounded because I wasn't sure what pronouns to use (his wife even said both, and called him/her by a different name entirely when introducing her to others.). I thought about the other person I know who wears what is usually thought of as the "other gender's" clothes, and how it was much easier for me, since she has always been herself to me. I didn't feel comfortable (in this place, also with the level of acquaintanceship I have with them, and her more than them) starting an involved discussion of what to call her/him, etc, though.

The Boggle-playing was fun, though I was definitely either rusty (I miss the lunchtime games) or out of my league... there were far too many rounds of me not finding any words no one else had. And my best two words of the evening were found by others (TRIREME and TERRORIST).

I suppose I shouldn't've been surprised by the food focus, but I was. A number of people brought snacks, and food was ordered in. Luckily, there was a sushi place practically across the way, so Q and I were able to go there... salmon sushi is yummy. It always tastes better to me than the tuna, too.

A fun event, all around.

The other event of my evening was the Tang party. Yup, a party devoted to Tang. Well, sort of. The hosts put on a couple of dance parties each year, with mp3s on the computer right there so anyone can mess with the play list, and lots of special effects (a disco ball AND strobe lights are possible!). I like these, since I can choose things I want to hear (well, so can everyone else, but it's not like a DJ who does the #2 "yes, yes, with smile" and never plays my request), and the volume is not too loud, plus I'm dancing with friends, no weird creepy guys cruising for chicks, no having to dress up egregiously to go dance.

Anyway. One room has the refreshments, and Tang is featured prominently at the Tang party (no, I don't know how this started), including flavors made for other countries, and the infamous hot mulled Tang (watch out for burned tongues!).

I was pleased to see lots of people dancing when we arrived, and had a chance to dance to a couple of fun ones before it was time to go (I didn't want to be out late; going to a wedding in the morning...). I got to see certain people dance who have very.... distinctive styles of movement. And see someone not recognize the newly-shaven at first. And see some little kids having fun. And be surprised at how many people I didn't recognize there.
