Among the many things I've been lame about this year, the porch has been one of those things that I've procrastinated about for too long. Today I made it to Russo's (I needed onions and wanted melon, which for some reason felt like a Russo's run), and finally picked up some plants for the porch. Not only that, they're transplanted! The porch isn't perfect, but I've rearranged the chairs and the plants, and it feels like a place I might hang out, rather than a place that isn't really presentable.

So far, I have:
  • two tomato plants (one is Sweet Million, the other a random indeterminate; neither are upside down because the lameness meant using the containers I have rather than going out to get something else, especially something that would have to be hung carefully to make sure it could handle the weight)
  • six basil plants
  • a dozen marigolds of two sorts (one yellow, one yellow with dark orange-red highlights), gotten not only for their prettiness and their edibility, but also because they have a reputation for keeping things that might nibble plants away
  • six jalapenos, gotten on a whim, figuring that smaller hot peppers might actually mature before the season ends (I tried bell peppers once, and they didn't get past green before frost), and might be another type of plant to inhibit critters
  • a French lavender shrub that I overwintered
  • a jade plant that I overwintered
  • two pots of chives that were originally planted by the previous owners and come back year after year

I would like to get more herbs, especially rosemary, oregano, thyme, and maybe some sage (and I'm open to other suggestions). Much less likely is getting a miniature lemon or lime tree, though it would be cool.

(Ideally, I'd like to redo the porch, incorporating some kind of structure on the blank wall that I could hang plants from over the whole thing (if I had pots o' moola, I picture something of iron, with delicate curlicues and leaves over it, and some arms that swing out from one side for bigger flowers), a pergola, and some kind of more organized pots built in (though really, that might be a disaster unless very well designed).)
