Labor Day's Night

magidI took some leftovers and some remaining veggies over to Z and E's for a last-minute dinner creation. Z decided to make sauteed greens (beet and the mysterious choi that might be collard) with onions and hot pepper flakes (it was rather spicy), and refried rice with basil and chinese chives of some sort. She also made something she called "chocolate pudding," but was in fact a cake with a chocolate sauce underneath... very yummy.
A low-key evening of catching up, comfortable knowing they could hand off the baby to me, or take care of him themselves, without worrying about entertaining me. I proofread Z's handout for her talk to the baby care people, made suggestions to her first draft (It felt odd, in some ways, editing something that was so... paragraphs of text. It lead to an interesting discussion of editing for appropriate tone while keeping individual voice.). Oh, and I got to hear Z and E in a duet as they sang the baby to sleep. It was lovely. I knew E had a good voice (he does a cappella percussion), but hadn't realized how well Z's voice works with his.
They're later-night people than I am, so of course I got home later than I'd hoped. And I foolishly read a book far too late, knowing I was cutting into precious sleep time, but unable to stop reading. The sleep problem was compounded by again waking up in the night with incredible deep itchiness in my legs. I ran a bath, but couldn't keep myself from scratching some before it was ready. And by the time I got out, put on cream, etc, it was too late to go back to bed. I know I'm going to lose energy sometime today; I hope I make it through work and the errands after before that happens...
