Farm share, week 5
Jul. 12th, 2023 07:14 pmSunday the farm sent an email with information about what was likely to come in this week's share, as usual. Today, we got a follow-up email: due to the rain and being downstream from the flooding in Vermont (6 inches in 12 hours is ridiculous) along the Connecticut River valley, plus many of their fields being low-lying, 80% of the farm is now flooded. They don't yet know what will happen with the rest of the season (although there was a distribution today, because a bunch had been harvested Monday), and won't until the water goes down; their best guess is Friday for that.
I'm lucky because while I am very sad about this, I can afford to get local produce from farmers markets and/or Mass Food Delivery; I hope the farm comes out of this ok.
First thoughts: I need to get onions and potatoes again. After that, colcannon, roasted cabbage, slaw with carrots, possibly a batch of sauerkaut. Stir-fried carrots, peas, onions, kale (left from last week) and some protein. Green salads with tuna, corn, and pickles (this seems to be my default salad meal these days). Possibly some ghormeh sabzi with the parsley and possibly other herbs. Roasted beets.

- two pounds of red beets (no greens)
- two pounds of orange carrots
- two medium heads of green cabbage (I chose one regular and one Savoy)
- a pound of mixed lettuce leaves
- a pound of sugar snap peas
- two bunches of parsley
- two bunches of cilantro (traded for anoter bunch of parsley and another head of cabbage)
- two bunches off other herbs (the shiso was gone by the time I got there, leaving holy basil, sage (I chose one of these), oregano, or ... drat, I forgot the last one, and I chose one of those, too! leaves longer than round, one lobe, with little flowers that look to have four petals; I tried a leaf, and my tongue is a tiny bit tingly now)
