eerie, but not hugely compelling writing, somehow, with ghosts after a train wreck, one of them malicious
Half Broke Horses (Jeannette Walls)
stories from a girl (later woman) growing up on the frontier (not so very long ago, either)
Inside the Halo and Beyond (Maxine Kumin)
about a woman with a head/neck injury, but oddly emotionally flat, as written
Garment of Shadows (Laurie R. King)
Sherlock Holmes fanfic novel, apparently the fourth in the series, focused on his adventures with his wife, this one in Morocco
Luna (Julie Anne Peters)
the younger teen sister of a trans high schooler, helping yet dealing with her own emotions as well
Peace Like a River (Leif Enger)
a family with Xtian miracles, how the eldest son became a fugitive, and the rest of the family trying to find him
Son of Destruction (Kit Reed)
disappointing because it was filed as sf, yet except for one tiny bit of plot that wasn't even fully fleshed (someone mentally causing another to combust), it was just a regular novel of a young man trying to find his family's past
This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage (Ann Patchett)
awesome book of essays by a talented writer, about writing, about living, about growing and changing and family. definitely a keeper.
