Movie, and some links
Mar. 22nd, 2006 12:03 pmLast night I went to an advance screening of Thank You for Smoking, about the main tobacco industry spokesman, Nick Naylor, promoting cigarettes as the health issues become more obvious, while working to be a good father to his son. I didn't expect such a funny movie; there were so many moments, lines, shots. I can't remember the last time I laughed so much at a movie (though I suspect it didn't hurt to be there with such a great group of people also gripped by giggling. (*waves to Mabfan, Gnomi, Bubblebabble, Farwing, and Coorr*)). It's based on a book; this used the movie format so well I can't imagine how it would work as a book (I haven't read the book; I'd likely feel differently had I done so.).
Anyway. Twelve thumbs up.
A hippo and tortoise blog from a nature preserve in Kenya, with a focus on Owen (a young hippo) and Mzee, a 130-year-old tortoise, who became friends after the tsunami in 2004.
Gorgeous dance photography (and more) by Lois Greenfield. Amazing images.
The top 1000 books owned by libraries worldwide (meaning worth being in the collection, not popularity in circulation). (I've read/seen/heard all or most of about a third of them. I suspect there's extreme underrepresentation for non-Western works.)
