Shabbat, etc
Jun. 2nd, 2002 04:58 pmFriday after work I helped
queue and
hrafn move into their new place (along with
treacle_well and
zzbottom, as noted elsewhere). I'm glad it didn't rain until later, but the cooler air would've been nice...
I was tired from moving boxes and bookshelves and barrels of stuff (well, ok, no barrels, but alliteration called), but decided I really wanted to use the Healthworks pass
cthulhia had given me, since it was the last day I could use it. I managed to use the elliptical cross trainer, some weight lifting, and stretching, in addition to the hot tub (which I assume is the reason I'm not filled with weird muscle aches)(it was definitely more fun when with a friend there, though...). I was completely tired out by the end, in the completely physical way that means a solid night's sleep will soon follow... I managed to stay awake long enough to eat the food I'd bought earlier, then fell into bed.
Shabbat morning, I woke up early, then dozed until it was really late.... aka 8:30. Weird. So I went to services. The room was uncomfortably warm, heading up past 85 degrees by the end, which is just plain unpleasant in a room filled with people and no breezes at all. Still, there was a baby-naming, and an aufrauf [1][2], also someone bentching gomel [3]. And I got a couple of invitations, including one to seudah shlishit [4] that I was pleased to accept.
So after a lazy afternoon that didn't quite include a long nap, over to see friends who live by Cambridge Commons, the ones who were nice enough to invite me to their 2nd seder. As usual, they have entertaining down to a science, with food arranged just so, people who are interesting to talk with, etc. I so envy their ability to make it all happen so beautifully, and make it seem so easy... There was much interesting conversation about theater and upcoming productions. My director friend is involved with a production of a play about some cutthroat accountants that is happening because I took him to its opening night as a new play at Brandeis last year. There was a feedback session after the show, and Jason (my director friend) told the playwright he'd be interested in it after the author played with it some more. No w it's being put on at a theater on Cape Cod. I feel like a successful matchmaker, somehow, though I had little to do with it...
[1] A groom being called to the Torah the day before his wedding, and people throwing candy at him after (though it could be a groom being called to the Torah a couple of days or a week or 2 before his wedding. Or it could be a bride in a women's prayer group, or in an egalitarian minyan).
[2] I feel like, using footnotes!
[3] Saying a blessing of thanksgiving for having survived a dangerous situation; in this case, an overseas flight. Other situations that lead to this blessing include childbirth, surviving traumatic illness, escaping a nasty accident, etc.
[4] The third meal on Shabbat (lit, "third meal"), also sometimes pronounced more like "shaleh shoodess," in a Yiddishized version. There is a commandment (taken more seriously by some than others) to have 3 meals on Shabbat (Friday night dinner, Saturday lunch, then this meal)(meal being defined by the consumption of bread, not merely some food while sitting down). I generally don't make a deal out of this, preferring to try to eat only when hungry, but in the summer there tends to be plenty of time for a 3rd meal..
Today I've been rather slothful, nothing much worth noting. On the other hand, the plants on my porch are taking advantage of the good growing weather (plus rain; I haven't had to water them much this year so far) to send out lots of new leaves (I need to turn some of them, so they're not too lopsided; the advantages of container gardening...), and I'm finally seeing some growth from the ginger! I'd just about given up, thinking that finally getting it into dirt had shocked it so much it had gone into a growing coma or something. Whereas now I'm hoping it just was on a root-growing frenzy.
I got the latest ArtsMail catalog, and am now tryi ng to figure out what I want to see, when, etc. So many choices...
Oh, and
prog, we should figure out when a cooking session would work, and really schedule it this time!
