Happy new year!
Jan. 16th, 2014 01:12 amToday (well, Wednesday night until Thursday dusk, the halachic day) is Tu Bishvat (sometimes written "Tu B'Shvat"; still means 15th of Shvat), which is the new year for the trees, rather like January 1 is the racehorse birthday. Age matters especially when trees are young, since for the first three years their fruit is forbidden, and in the fourth year, it's all due to the Temple (after that, if in Israel, the harvests are tithed).
Often, there are gatherings focusing on eating many types of fruit and drinking wine. This year I must have missed whatever community ones there were, so I shall eat some fruit (given what's in the house, that would be dried figs and grapefruit), and dream of trees flowering in spring.
