Why is it if I say I went to the gym and walked on a treadmill for a hour, it's admirable, but if I say I walked for an hour to get somewhere I'm weird? It doesn't make any sense to me.

If the next Doctor were an owl, then he'd really be Doctor Who.

Boston-area people: the Museum of Science has an exhibit of some Dead Sea Scrolls, through October 20.
Also, though a quick search shows nothing since late March, it was announced then that there will be a Wegman's in the Fenway, at the Landmark Center.

A small but good thing: Ravelry has finally changed it so I can give a link to my whole projects page, rather than just a link to a given project. Yay!

A link that was making the rounds a couple of weeks ago, about why Finnish babies often sleep in cardboard boxes. It looks like a really well thought-out benefit, giving a new mom what she needs while tying it to early obstetrician visits.

Particularly for the editors who love pig products: Bacon Ipsum.
Also on the word front: words that are their own opposites (no wonder English is difficult to learn!)

Food for thought, about not always "rescuing" people, letting them solve their own problems, believing that they can, treating them as whole and capable. Not going to solve truly broken dynamics, but definitely something I need to think about.

Also, a personal essay (illustrated!) about depression, some of which looked a bit too familiar.
I read this article, and while my numbers are different, a lot of the emotions were similar (and why I can't have a scale in my house). One quote that resonated:
"You’re going about your life and you feel pretty awesome, but then for one reason or another you hop on a scale and your day is ruined and you’re ugly and disgusting and miserable. Why do we do this? Why is a number more important than how we actually feel?"

An article about the Asylum, and the value of learning by making, especially contrasted with traditional classroom learning.

In the category of cool ways to harvest energy: floor tiles that use footsteps.

A few recipes that caught my eye: two ingredient cookies (mix-ins optional and varied); a green smoothie; and

Gluten-free chocolate chip cookies:

Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C.

Combine in a food processor and process until very smooth.
1.25 c canned chickpeas, rinsed and patted dry (400 gram can, 240 gram drained weight, almost all of it)
2 tsp vanilla extract
0.5 c + 2 T (165 grams) natural peanut butter
0.25 c (80 grams) honey
1 tsp baking powder
a pinch of salt if peanut butter doesn’t have salt in it

Stir in 0.5 c chocolate chips, or pulse once or twice. The mixture will be very thick and sticky.

With wet hands, form into 1.5 in. balls. Place on a piece of parchment paper. If you want them to look more like normal cookies, press down slightly. They don’t do much rising. Bake for about 10 minutes.

Yields about fourteen cookies..

Who thinks its a weird thing if you walk an hour??

I have seen several recipes lately for cookies/brownies with chickpeas instead of flour/eggs/etc. I need to try one.

Cultural values.

The reason why certain people I'm acquainted with had such an aversion to riding the bus in the past.

At least you're not living in LA?
