Arisia 2013
Jan. 25th, 2013 12:25 amI did a lot of work towards Arisia this year; this post isn't about that, but the con I went to as a regular attendee.
Shabbat day I walked to the con, meeting up with friends as planned for a picnic lunch in their room. I got to hang out with them more than I've managed in a while, catching up, as the baby crawled around. Added bonus: non-automatic bathroom availability (the bathrooms in the public areas of the hotel are all automatic, which I prefer to avoid if possible on Shabbat). I made it to the one scheduled thing I'd hoped to make it to that day, Michael Anderson's Hallucinating Shakespeare, which was wonderful and funny. I hadn't before realized the answering machine possibilities of the Bard's language. Afterward, I got to hang out with friend who's currently based in NC, which was wonderful, touching base with someone I usually see only online.
As always, there were amazing hall costumes. My favorites included a Weeping Angel, Leela with a radio-controlled K9, the little lady who made awesome costumes in The Incredibles, and HaniS's v2.0 blue-light hands (now with lucite ends!). The costume I missed that I regret not seeing: the Tardis Princess, with a hat that lit up and a blue police-box dress that was bigger on the inside than the outside, with the interior of the Tardis hand painted on canvas. that folded out.
Sunday I walked in, and got to go to half of the panel on food (which was put in so totally the wrong room; far too small), and half of Michael Anderson's second show, Anarchist Pep Rally. Thus ended my attendance of scheduled things. I rather wish I'd been able to go to more than a one-hour show, half of another, and one panel.
Sunday evening, i got to congratulate friends who got married back in August across the continent (mazal tov again!), and see the college friends who come to Arisia from NJ most years. There is something wonderful about hanging out with friends who've known me as long as they have, and we're still all friends, however long distance and intermittent. I admit to jealousy that they still both look just like they did in college, though :-)
What I didn't do well on Sunday: managing food. I didn't pack food, and I paid for that later. Reminder to self: hard-boiled eggs are easy, or the vegan jerky, or cheese and crackers (and tomatoes?). Pay more attention next time.
Monday I walked in, and after a bunch of other responsibilities, had a lull before more, which I got to fill with more time with the college friends.
And of course, woven in and around everything else, I kept seeing people I knew all over the con, for a quick hi, or some chat. I wish I'd had more time to stop and have real conversations.
