Little snippets

magidAfter my previous questions about coffee beans, a friend gave me some fancy beans (I don't remember the exact variety; I should have written it down. I'll ask once he's back in town) that I got to watch roasting in his home roaster. I hadn't realized how similar to pistachios the raw beans look, nor how much they're changed by roasting, expanding and caramelizing. It was interesting to watch and smell. Then I was at a baby-welcoming open house where they had a surplus of citrus. So I now have a quart jar of orange-coffee liqueur and another quart of tangelo-mocha (read: I didn't have a lot of coffee left, but plenty of Taza cocoa nibs) liqueur started. They'll be done in two weeks, except for however they'll age over time, which citrus does, definitely.
I didn't make it to all the social events I'd planned to this weekend, alas. Of those I did attend, it was a pleasant mix of hanging out with known people and meeting new people. Most memorable party snacks of the weekend: Jewish South African fish cakes in chutney sauce, and chickpea-onion mini-sambusaks. Most unexpected thing: a new acquaintance giving me a very long purple and dark gray scarf his German grandmother had knitted. Also, a cute dog with soulful eyes begging politely for baby carrot sticks.
A follow-up to the Stanford free online classes: MIT will offer free online instruction, not for a degree, but some kind of certificate of completion. (via Forbes)
I've updated my metro Boston farmers markets Google calendar for the winter markets I know about.
My keyboard died a few weeks ago. Or at least, it thinks it doesn't have charged batteries in it when it does; perhaps someone could fix it? Other than this, it's a completely usable wireless keyboard, and the associated mouse and USB connector are perfectly fine. Ping if you want it.
