Farm share

magidYes, it's the middle of winter (with arctic cold today, even). But it doesn't mean the farm share glory has to be over: I found that there's a winter share offered by Enterprise Farm that goes through March! (It started in December.) It's a slightly different beast than a summer farm share: they get produce from a number of local (New England, mostly MA) farms, plus some farther away (NC, FL), though all east coast, to minimize the carbon footprint while offering a variety of vegetables and fruits. I'm thinking of signing up for the rest of the season, probably a large share (~15 lb/week), now that the Somerville pickup on Wednesdays has extended into evening hours, so I could go after work. Plus the distribution site is Kickass Cupcakes, which would mean the possibility of a weekly stop at When Pigs Fly next door (this could be dangerous :-).
Also, Red Fire Farm (my regular farm) is looking for someone with Filemaker experience to build them a custom database. I think they'd prefer to barter (produce or a share, I suppose). If anyone's interested, email Sarah (jobs at redfirefarm dot com) with examples of similar work.
(They also have open slots for working on the farm, but I assume that's less of interest to anyone likely to read this.)
In other farm news, there's a new person running the flower share.
And there are estimates of how much produce got donated to area food relief organizations:
Subsidized shares for low income share holders: $3825
Farmers' Market donations to Open Pantry: $450
Cambridge Harvest Wed. CSA leftover produce: $5000 to Food for Free
Cambridge Harvest Fri. CSA leftover produce: $6000 to Food for Free
JP CSA leftover produce: $4200 for Food Not Bombs
Somerville CSA leftover produce: $3500 for the Somerville Family Center
MIT CSA leftover produce: $4800 (not sure to which group)
Brighton CSA leftover produce: $2000 for Food Not Bombs
Common Wealth CSA leftover produce: $1275 for the Greenfield Food Shelter
Granby CSA, stand and packing shed produce: $6000 for Open Pantry and Kate's Kitchen
The (approximate) total: $37,050.
