They're migrating the servers (to Montana! there ought to be enough space for LJ there :-) soon (where soon = about 15 minutes from now). They're predicting at least 4 hours down, with a slow ramp-up afterward. What I don't understand is why this was scheduled for a time that so many people are likely to be using the site, rather than, say overnight, or on a weekend. *is puzzled*

Depends where the largest disturbable user base is. As radiologists in the US have discovered, it's always daytime somewhere. (For the radiologists, it means that a hospital can always ship films to somewhere where its daytime to have them read, rather than waking up a local radiologist at night).

True, that. I believe that the second largest concentration of users is in Russia, which does throw a bit of a timing spanner in the works. However, that leaves the weekend as an option (when a lot fewer people are posting in every time zone).

I think that Russia's actually the single-largest userbase for LJ, with the USA'nians coming in second these days. Wacky! Also, it's owned by Russians these days, so.

Depends on how your criteria. It looks like the number of accounts is far more USian than Russian. I'd think that even with Russian overlords, a server migration time would not be chosen because of the time in Russia.

Maybe since it's people on the West Coast who are doing the physical moving, they wanted to start early enough in the day that, should problems arise, people could continue working on the move without having to be paid overtime.

Maybe they were testing if US work productivity would go up during those four hours. :)
