Tech question
Nov. 10th, 2008 07:15 pmSo, thanks to Papasmurf, I finally got the photos off my camera (yeah, the one I bought in May... I'm lame). Which is great: I can now start sending them to the people I promised photos to (a mere six months late). Except that when I try to send them via Gmail, it takes so much time (one with 4 photos attached hasn't yet sent, after 50 minutes, because it's "still working..."; the first attempt, with one photo, took close to a quarter of an hour) that something seems to be wrong. I have no clue as to what that might be, or whether I'm being unrealistic about the limits of Gmail (the files are 2-3 MB). Any ideas what I should do?

Date: 2008-11-11 01:27 am (UTC)I just figured out how to make them smaller; hopefully it will go through this time, though it's far from quick still. Is there any convention about usable sizes/resolutions?
(A couple of photos I'm not allowed to post, just email. I'd rather not deal with yet another site to post photos to, given that I'm likely to post a bunch here and/or on Facebook already.)

For example, I got about 5050 kbps download and 267 kbps upload (kpbs = kilobits per second).
So, you can then calculate how long it should take you to upload stuff. (Divide by 8 to change kilobits to kilobytes, then divide by 1024 to change kilobytes to megabytes, then you can multiply by 60 to get megabytes per minute. So, for my example, it's about 2 MB in one minute, so 4 files of 2-3 MB each should take on the order of 5 minutes.)

Date: 2008-11-11 01:38 pm (UTC)That gives me 736 kb/s download and 132 kb/s upload, or 0.966796872 MB/min, so those 4 files totaling about 10 MB should have taken around 10 minutes. So something wasn't right, that Gmail was "working...." for three quarters of an hour until I just canceled it to play around with photo (file) size.
