I had a busy day sukkah hopping with my family out in Worcester yesterday, and though I knew chag started tonight (Shmini Atzeret followed by Simchat Torah), I hadn't quite... internalized that information. I didn't have any plans, nor any meals that inspired me to make them. This morning I thought about chicken with root veggies (basic but yummy), then as I walked to Trader Joe's (proteins!) started figuring out what else to make (given that there really does need to be food available pretty much instantly on Simchat Torah). Originally I had onions, carrots, potatoes, and rutabaga with the chicken, then realized I'm almost done with the red sauerkraut, plus I have two heads of green cabbage that need to be kraut-ized. And then TJ's didn't have chicken parts anyway. And when I got home I found the parsnips I'd completely forgotten about. So everything got shifted around a bit, and this is what I made:

- roasted potatoes, onions, and rutabaga (incredibly nummy when cooked well; must remember that), which ended up eaten as breakfast/lunch/snack
- onion, red sauerkraut, apples, and cranberries baked under a turkey breast, which was topped with honey and chipotle mustard
- turkey meatloaf (the same one I made a few weeks back)
- parsnip-carrot soup with ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cumin
- a new batch of sauerkraut started, with slices of daikon and carrot plus a hot pepper

I have some of the spicy cashew noodles and the sauerkraut-and-vegan-sausage dish left from Shabbat, and if I go for milchigs instead, I have some lovely cheeses (some from Mom's open sukkah, she being my model for always having far too much food...) that can go on bread or with eggs. The produce I have left: kale, apples, some small carrots, onions, potatoes, a winter squash, and a cucumber. It feels under control, if a tiny bit boring.

Still to do: retrieve laundry from dryer; learn laining; set up burner, hot tray, and urn; shower and suchlike.

I'll be offline until Wednesday night again. Chag sameach to those celebrating.
