Riversing and housewarming
Sep. 22nd, 2008 11:30 amYesterday afternoon I went to Winthrop Park (in Harvard Square) to hear Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band, and see some of the Madcap Rumpus Society stilting and spinning and such. I love their sound; I have to move to it, even when I'm exhausted. It was great to see such a large crowd grooving to the music.
There were huge puttpets put on, and the police stopped traffic so everyone could parade down JFK Street to Memorial Drive (already closed off as usual Sunday afternoons) to the Weeks Footbridge, to start Riversing. (Obviously, the theme of my Sunday was getting to go on streets without a car :-). Riversing itself was less interesting for me, mostly because I was so worn out. I sat leaning against a tree, but didn't sing along (or get a handout with the words) with the water-themed songs (I did note lyrics about the wide Jordan River, which is not so accurate anymore...), doing more people watching than anything else. I stayed to hear ENSMB again, and had the pleasure of running into Meg and her three boys, a wholly unexpected bonus.
Also this weekend, I got to attend PapaSmurf's housewarming. He has a room in an amazing house, all wood and windows and built-in storage so the lines of the house are clear (and surprisingly less right-angled than most). It looked like a house that would be featured in a magazine (I totally couldn't imagine my clutter in that sort of space :-).
Highlights included meeting a bunch of new people (the other hosts, their daughter, Loki, Trouble, Eric, the other Amanda, Rob, et al), reconnecting with people I'd met already, seeing some wonderful firearts (spinning poi, dart, staff, also firebreathing (multiple people working together at times), fireswallowing, and a fiery marionette), having the pull-apart white-wheat bread I'd brought vanish quickly, interesting conversation about sf and Dr. Who, good hugs, having the apricot-hot pepper liqueur I'd also brought kept to be savored over time, and compliments on my outfit (though I didn't plan as well as I might've: I didn't have layers enough for the cold).
