Not quite the commute I'd planned
Jan. 17th, 2008 11:49 amThe plan: get up when the visiting Dad did (he's an official Harvard proctor!), earlier than usual for me. Fix his breakfast and lunch. Go to the Butcherie for some of the food on my Arisia list. Once the necessary things were in the fridge at home, walk to work as usual, bringing gym gear.
What happened: got up about when Dad did. Fixed his breakfast and lunch. Left my food and gym gear at home, since I'd be home to get it later. Got a flat when most of the way to the Butcherie. Got food for Arisia. Tried putting air in the tire. Drove slowly, with emergency blinkers, on the right. Air didn't stay in. Was passed on the right by a crazy driver. Pulled into a second place to put air in the tire. Man said he'd do it for me (obviously trying to keep me from taking a long time at the air hose he wanted to use). Didn't work. Looked like the air wasn't even making it into the tire. Asked if he knew of a tire place nearby. He said there were a couple just down Comm Ave. Started driving, blinkers on, staying in first. Passed by bicyclists. Regretted not having gotten around to using Tapuz's tire place recommendation. Just before getting to the first tire place, Boston cop asked if I was going to turn in there. Said yes. Tire guy looked, said I needed four new tires. Probably not a bad idea; agree. First good luck of the day: tires on sale! Arranged to have wiper blades replaced as well. Sorted groceries, leaving ones that are shelf stable enough in the car. Carried the rest to work via the green line. Missed first train: I didn't have a walk signal to cross traffic. Walked two stops until a second train came by. Put groceries in the fridge at work. Second luck of the day: had bought food enough to cover breakfast/lunch. Car work should be done before the end of the day. And driving home from there means Trader Joe's (the other errand on today's list) is on the way home.
Not as inconvenient as it might have been (on the way to Arisia erev Shabbat, for instance, or on a holiday Monday), but still, that's $500 or so I hadn't planned to spend, plus no real walking today.

Date: 2008-01-18 04:12 am (UTC)And to think that I nearly called to grump about getting lost in Medford. And Somerville. And then Melrose. But, FOUR new tires? Sigh.
Hope the rest of the weekend goes happily.

Date: 2008-01-18 03:16 pm (UTC)I know I'll have to make a couple of trips from the car to get all the stuff in, but I'm mostly packed, so it'll likely be fine.

Date: 2008-01-18 03:44 pm (UTC)Were you able to at least do some walking back to the shop after work, or did you have to take the T because of the groceries and/or time constraints?
I hope today goes smoothly and you have a lovely Shabbat and fun convention.
