Marathon rocks!
Oct. 24th, 2007 10:59 amMy feet have been hurting, sure sign that I need new sneakers (even though it feels like I 'just' got new ones this spring*...). So I went to Marathon Sports, where they not only fitted me for new sneakers (I love that they watch people walk before suggesting which kind(s) are likely), but finally answered a question I've had for ages: why are sneakers given a mileage life that's the same for runners and walkers? That is, if I can expect 300-500 miles from these shoes running, why should it be the same walking, when there's so much less force put on the shoes from walking? According to the guy at the shop, it's because so much more time is spent walking that the support bits are compressed as much as pounding them with greater weight but for less time (also fewer strides, but he didn't mention that). Which makes sense. I'm glad I finally have an answer! (Even though it means I should be going through even more sneakers/year than I do, which is not cheap.)
* It wasn't so many years ago that I'd have sneakers for multiple years. Yeah, I was walking less, but not that much less. I don't know how much is footwear technology changes and how much is aging feet...
