Last week's haul:
  • a bunch of onions (choice of red or yellow; yellow was chosen)
  • five summer squash/zucchini (all zucchini picked)
  • a bunch of red beets with greens
  • a head of garlic with a long stalk
  • a pound of carrots
  • a quarter pound of basil
  • a bunch of kale or chard, with a variety of chard colors available
  • two heads of lettuce

This week's bounty included
  • two heads of lettuce (I chose different kinds of red-leaved ones)
  • two pickling cucumbers
  • two pounds of potatoes (choice of red-skinned or 'regular', with sizes ranging from smaller than my thumbnail to medium)
  • two and a half pounds of summer squash (I nabbed the last zucchini as part of mine)
  • a bunch of dill
  • a bunch of chard (I chose yellow, figuring that if chard came in the organics delivery, it would likely be red or white)
  • a head of garlic with green stem
  • three white onions with some green on top
  • a bunch of carrots

Farm notes:
There was information about this year's tomato festival. To my great sadness, this year it's on a Saturday, not a Sunday (Saturday, August 25, noon-5, if you want to go). Phooey. I had been looking forward to it.

They're offering bulk orders of pickling cucumbers, $30 for a half-bushel. That's a bit too many cucumbers for me, still not a pickler. Basil is $6/lb, and apparently dill and garlic are also available, price not quoted. Bulk orders have to be arranged in advance; this next week won't work for me, but perhaps after that... I can imagine doing lots of interesting garlic things. (Now to figure out how to fit a chest freezer in the apartment!)

Possibly of interest: NOFA is having its summer conference August 10-12 at Hampshire College.

Small box, one third fruit.
  • a bunch of red chard (MA grown) (aha! I guess right!)
  • a bunch of broccoli
  • three ears of corn
  • two summer squashes (MA grown)
  • seven medium-small yellow onions
  • two large Garnet yams
  • eight Roma tomatoes
  • three Valencia oranges
  • two large pink grapefruit
  • a mango
  • two nectarines
  • two peaches

That seems like a good price for basil, although I'm not sure that I can visualize what a pound looks like. I might be interested to go in on some basil with you to make some pesto to freeze. Mmmm, pesto.

I think a reasonable comparison would be those one-pound bags of spinach. Or four of those little flat plastic containers of herbs, if they're four-ounce packages. Yeah, I think it's a good price.

I won't be picking up next week, so I'll see whether basil will still be available the week after.

I hadn't realized you planned to do both farm share and Boston Organics for the summer- you are the cookin' mastah.
And I would also love to go in on some basil with you at that price.

I usually cut way down on Boston Organics for the summer, and switch to a bit more fruit, especially since I didn't get a fruit share this year. I probably should put it on hiatus, to keep from total inundation. (Or host a heck of a lot more meals than I've managed so far :-)

OK, that makes 3 of us for basil. Any idea of how much you'd like for yourself?

All of this week's share fit in one of the Whole Foods reusable bags, the ones that are sort of cloth-like. I'm not sure why, but I put the handles around my forehead, and carried it that way, which worked fine, and felt more balanced than switching hands back and forth. I don't know which muscles took the weight; it wasn't noticeable the way carrying by hand would have been.

*giggle* amusing image- I'll look for crease marks on yer noggin when I see you! And I've done the same thing, then realized that the right size handle loop bag I can wear as though it were a backpack, and the weight evenly distributes very well. Simple!
Speaking of which, you got my email about tonight tix bought? All set and should we just meet there??

let's try that again...

I suppose a pound, based on the measures you gave above. When you get the dill and garlic prices, I'm curious about those too. Dill bunches are always too big...

*grin*

I tend not to like using bags as backpacks, for some reason (and these handles weren't big enough for that, really), plus I already had a backpack on.

Looking forward to tonight.

I'm not sure what I'd do with huge amounts of dill, unless I get a box of the cucumbers and make dill pickles...
