There's a bill being considered that will allow using a number of non-organic ingredients in products while keeping an organic label.
To wit:
annatto, beet juice extract color, beta carotene, black currant juice color, black/purple carrot juice color, blueberry juice color, carrot juice color, cherry juice color, chokeberry/aronia juice color, elderberry juice color, grape juice color, grape skin extract color, paprika color, pumpkin juice color, purple potato juice color, red cabbage extract color, red radish extract color, saffron extract color, turmeric extract color, casings from processed intestines, celery powder, chia, dillweed oil, fish oil, fructooligosaccharides, frozen galangal, gelatin, hops, oligofructose enriched inulin, konjac flour, frozen lemongrass, unbleached orange shellac, chipotle chile pepper, unmodified rice starch, sweet potato starch, Turkish bay leaves, wakame seaweed, whey protein concentrate (35%-80%)
I think that the government should not continue to gut the organic regulations like this (especially with products that could be made organic so easily if required. For instance, there are lots of organic carrots out there already, so it can't be too much of an agricultural challenge to raise more and extract juice.)
In any case, today is the last day for public comments. If you want to comment, go here, search for "ams-tm-07-0062", and click on the little comment icon.

Date: 2007-05-22 09:12 pm (UTC)I am firmly against the proposed re-write of organic components. Organic has to do with farming methods for food; allowing components in that are not organically raised while retaining the organic label would be like allowing a "small" amount of pork and shellfish in Kosher products while maintaining the Kosher status. Uh-uh. Not acceptable.
