there was an article in this morning's globe about, essentially, cool non-chain places to hang out as long as you want and imbibe coffee (other things available, but that was the essential offering, apparently), be out of the house and entertained by the flow of people. they mentioned the someday cafe in davis, but not the diesel. i suppose it would've been good for them to be mentioned, get more business (though i can imagine the writers/editors deciding having 2 places in davis sq mentioned would be 1 too many, so they kept the someday). but i'm kinda glad it wasn't listed, keeping it a place for people who already know it's there, or find it on their own.

Really, plenty of people already know about the Diesel, I think. Enough so that it's packed most evenings, from what I've been able to tell.

I've never actually been to the Someday Cafe. Maybe some day . . .

*groan* You really ought to be punished for that one.

the someday tends to look crowded whenever i go by, plus they get foot traffic from the T and the theater, so i'd think they'd be doing ok for business, too.

<i'm ignoring that attempted pun. it'll just go away. yes, it will.>

what is with this today? i can't seem to get anything after a double paragraph return to show up. (just another symptom of today's turned-to-blechiness. feh)

Colorfulness

I get the impression that the Someday fits in the niche of people who want less-corporate coffee (read: "Starbucks") but want a somewhat less "colorful" crowd than the Diesel.

I didn't discover the Diesel until a month into my residence here, when the seed of what would one day become the Boston Warren ([livejournal.com profile] cthulhia, Denis and I having just met one another) played there together for the first time. (Zarcana, on the table in the back with the doohickeys in it.) Pretty soon it had replaced the Someday as my daily coffee-gettie place. I have found its coffee to be consistently better than the average Someday cup, plus it has yummy food, plus a higher chance of finding a place to sit (often with a power outlet in reach), plus the music has a significantly lower chance of driving me away, plus all the stuff I wrote about yesterday.

The Someday seems to have embarrassingly crappy artwork hanging up far more often than the diesel does, but maybe this is just me.

However, I will always treasure my Someday "U.S. Out Of Somerville" mug. Which I don't know where is. Proabably at ORA. I should rescue.

I unfortunately know a positive integer number of people who look at me funny when I mention plans to spend time there, because isn't that place just for lesbians? So, Misconceptions Abound, which may contribute to lack of media coverage... but yer right, in some ways this is preferable. :)

you managed to find the diesel far faster than i did, since i first went there this fall. & i've been local off & on (those out-of-country experiences...) since 1988. though i still think davis sq wasn't quite so funky when i lived near it...

i'm warped with how i rate hang-out places, since i have managed to avoid the coffee addiction so far, to the extent of not having any except in some sorts of dessert. so instead i compare how many friends i can find at each one :-)

i always seem to see guys @ the diesel when i go...they must obviously be lesbians trapped in guy bodies....

I found Diesel not long after moving to Davis, because I often like to wander, and so wandered by. I'd heard of the Someday from Jim's song, but for whatever reason I immediately prefered Diesel. This may not be entirely undue to the fact that it is slightly closer to my house. :)

Once or twice, I heard vague comments from people about the Diesel being a dyke hangout, but I've never seen anything to back that up, nor did the couple of people have anything to support the claims. I'll also admit that having heard that, I'd stop by a bit more often with some vague hopes in mind, but I seem to not have the ability to get hit on by a chick.
