Miscabibble
Dec. 19th, 2006 11:18 amI got a T car to myself this morning. A train was arriving outbound as I got to Harvard, and there was an announcement that it was the end of the line for the train, passengers should get out and take the next one. As I came down the first set of stairs, another announcement followed, saying that the train was now an inbound train. So I got on. Three different T employees talked with me before the train moved again, questioning where I was going (and a couple of them seemed unsure that the train would be inbound). None of the people waiting by the inbound track bounded up to take the train, so I was alone in the car, free to enjoy the novelty of the train going 'backwards', looking out to see just when it switched tracks.
edit This must be my day for interesting T stuff: I was inbound coming into Boylston, standing at the front of the train. The driver stopped the train just after the platform started, but before it was publicly accessible, opened the front door, said not to get out, and dashed out himself. He went just in front of the train, tossed a set of keys to a T worker who'd opened a wrong-side door in an empty train going in the other direction, then dashed back on again. I wonder what the keys were to. /edit
Since Shreve, Crump, and Low has moved, their windows have become excessively boring.
There was a story on WBUR about the Red Sox's signing that new Japanese pitcher*, and they mentioned how this would increase Japanese tourism in Boston. As someone who frequently walks through Harvard Yard past the statue of John Harvard**, I'd thought that the average Japanese adult had already visited Boston at least 1.74 times...
* The dollars involved are just staggering; I really don't get sports.
** Well, not. But it's convenient to call it that anyway.
Trader Joe's no longer carries their house-brand sandwich cookies in ginger flavor. It has been pointed out that Newman's Own brand still has them. I'm still disappointed that TJ's lost them so quickly.
Con guests of honor I'm excited about: Hilary Scott at Arisia, and Guy Gavriel Kay at Vericon (with early copies of his newest novel). Squee!
I walked the tree-lined path in the middle of Comm Ave the other night, enjoying the white lights the trees are wrapped in. It was disturbing to see them plugged into the ground, though. Something about there being outlets in the middle of the grassy space points out just how artificial the landscape here really is.
Week-old xmas tree corpses smell a lot better than mine would after that time.
According to this story, all the old Scottish regiments have been merged into one Royal Regiment of Scotland, resulting in an extreme lack of appropriate-tartan kilts.

- "The men... have just 320 kilts, or one for every 15 soldiers." How many soldiers are in the Royal Regiment?
- "The full contract is worth up to $1.95 million, ... and will involve 15,000 yards of fabric." What is the approximate cost per kilt? How many yards does each kilt require?

(And in general, I wish there were some way of knowing when something was likely to be discontinued, so people could stock up.)
