House Jacks!
Nov. 2nd, 2006 10:27 amLast night I went to a House Jacks concert at Passim. I didn't expect there to be an opening group, but MIT's Resonance sang some nice covers first.
And then the main event, and I was totally blown away. Their music is amazing, the depth of it, the percussion, the bass, the brass (!). And, yes, the hotness of the performers. A whole lot of excellence going on. They sang a lot of their own music, including I Want It All, Great Big USA, Bam, The Leaving Kind, and No Ride (There were more, but I don't remember the others; maybe some of the other people who were there do?). And they took audience requests for songs they've never sung before, so we got some amazing improv, ranging from Prince to the Zombie Jamboree... country and western style, to the theme from The Muppet Show, and an attempt at Lehrer's Elements song. And many familiar songs I'm again blanking on. And as a special bonus for seeing them jet-lagged after coming back from a conference of tourism people in Vienna, we heard a medley of James Bond theme songs. The music was just amazing. The main percussion guy, Wes Carroll, has two DVDs about doing percussion. Before the whole-group encore, he did an amazing all-percussion improv that blew me away. Their patter is fun, and funny. No skits, not much with choreography, just flow with the groove of the words.
Definitely worth seeing when they return, hopefully again with congenial people.
The only negative? The newest CD cover design is too dark to be signed.
