Lady Windermere's Fan
Oct. 20th, 2006 05:04 pmLast night I saw Lady Windermere's Fan (Oscar Wilde) at the Loeb Ex. It's a very funny play, and they obviously had a lot of fun with the production.
The set was bare bones, just some cream-yellow wooden boxes that got moved about between scenes. There were some props (the fan, of course, among others), not many. Costuming was entertaining, mixing modern and not-quite-so. It mostly worked, barring the fallen hem and the obvious undergarment.
The one obvious change from the original script was that it was moved from London to New London, with references to New Haven and Canadia (sic) thrown in, instead of the English references (for the record, Ottowan kangaroos apprently fly). Though they kept Curzon Street, interestingly, and the peerage, however out of place it seemed for Connecticut.
Still, it's a lovely play, the dialogue snappy and wonderful. I wasn't sure that the central point to the plot quite worked, but ignoring that (does one spend lots and lots of time as well as money on one's blackmailer?), it was lovely, the twists and turns slightly reminiscent of a Wodehousian plot, but with much more edge. And the actors did a great job of it. All thumbs up recommendation (it's playing tonight and tomorrow night; tickets are free).
