I finally made it Savage & Co. in Waltham (their hours are 8-12 and 1-4 weekdays; no Sunday hours, so this was nontrivial) to get more flour. I was sort of expecting a baking-focused Paper & Provisions where I could meander the aisles, but it's not like that at all. I went to the front desk and asked for the things I wanted, then picked them up at the loading dock. It means less random finding of kosher stuff, since it feels awkward asking about the kosher status of whatever's around (there's not even a list of products I could check status of online). They had the King Arthur regular and white wheat flours (my first time getting the latter in a 50-lb bag), though yeast only comes in 2-pound bags (not 1-pound ones). I'm not sure when I can next make it out there, so I'm still on the market for a flour supplier once I finish these.

Neat wooden lampshades.

I stayed at Maple Hill Farm this weekend, and it was a very nice experience. I haven't been at a B & B in ages, and I think this spoiled me. The pluses: gorgeous old house; plenty of common space with lots of media (TV, music, books, magazines, games) that didn't feel like I was putting someone out; the (unused, alas) possibilities of using a hot tub on the porch, or borrowing a bike or boat (or skis, in winter); easy Shabbat accommodation; . The minuses: slightly too soft mattress; my inability to have one of their cooked breakfasts (they raise their own chickens for eggs; I so wanted something more than cold cereal, however nice the cereal was). Oh, and the three dogs were very friendly (when they managed to get past the gate from the kitchen).

Best typo here: "carousal" for "carousel". (Though "Noah's Arc" is a worthy runner-up.)

Sukkot prep
  • I caved and bought prefab 5-foot by 12-foot schach, which I rolled out Tuesday night. The frame was already up, the porch railings technically high enough to count as walls if I don't get around to something that will break the wind (I rarely do; there's just not enough time for me to do it all, and that kind of thing is more easily done as a two-person job). I still have to move excess plant containers and such around to maximize seating, but otherwise, the sukkah is done.
  • A midday dash to Brookline, and I've got my etrog (pleasingly bumpy, pitom intact) and lulav (the palm straight, the myrtle leaves starting in threes, the willow still green), plus some last groceries.
  • All that's left is the cooking (and house cleaning/straightening, of course), which is tonight's job. I'm tired even before I start. (A full night's sleep would be a good thing Any Night Now.)
